Nursing at NYC Health + Hospitals/South Brooklyn Health

Message from the South Brooklyn Health CNO

Leonid Mirakov, MSN, RN
Interim Chief Nursing Officer
NYC Health + Hospitals/South Brooklyn Health

It is with great pride and a deep sense of responsibility that I share our commitment to excellence in patient care, professional development, and nursing leadership within our organization. As the Chief Nursing Officer, I am honored to lead a team of dedicated nurses who not only exemplify compassionate care but also contribute significantly to the advancement of our profession and the communities we serve.

Our nursing team is central to the exceptional care that our patients receive each and every day. In our pursuit of excellence, we are pleased to be pursuing Magnet designation, an achievement that recognizes the highest standards in nursing practice. This journey reflects our dedication to creating an environment where nurses are empowered to lead, innovate, and continuously improve care. Magnet is more than just a designation; it is a reflection of the core values that drive us: quality, safety, patient centered care, and an unwavering commitment to professionalism.

Alongside our pursuit of Magnet status, we are proud to maintain a variety of other prestigious nursing designations. These accolades highlight the outstanding contributions of our nursing team in areas such as education, leadership, and specialty care. We are dedicated to supporting our nurses’ growth through robust professional development programs, and by fostering an environment that encourages collaboration, autonomy, and shared governance.

A cornerstone of our nursing practice is our professional governance structure, which enables nurses at all levels to have a voice in decision-making processes that impact patient care and nursing practice. By maintaining an inclusive and collaborative approach, we ensure that our nurses are equipped to meet the evolving challenges of healthcare and can provide the highest quality of care to our patients.

Our commitment to these principles of excellence, professionalism, and governance, remains steadfast. As we continue to grow and evolve as a nursing organization, we remain focused on advancing patient care and enhancing the nursing profession through leadership, innovation, and collaboration.

We are grateful for the trust you place in us, and we look forward to sharing more of our journey with you as we continue to strive for excellence in every aspect of our work.

Professional Practice

  • Professional Practice Model

Our Professional Practice Model, the NYC CARING Model, serves as the foundation for how nursing care is delivered across our organization. Grounded in our mission, vision, and shared governance structure, the model integrates structure, process, and outcomes to guide professional nursing practice. Supported by the pillars of quality, culture of safety, care experience, access to care, and financial sustainability, our nurses are empowered to deliver equitable, evidence-based, and patient-centered care. Through ICARE values and interdisciplinary collaboration, nurses actively shape practice and drive excellence in outcomes for the communities we serve.

Professional Governance

  • Professional Governance

Our Professional Governance structure empowers nurses at all levels to actively participate in decision-making and shape clinical practice. Through a network of specialty practice councils and hospital-wide councils, nurses collaborate to advance quality, safety, innovation, and professional development.

These councils are supported by system-level committees, ensuring alignment across NYC Health + Hospitals while amplifying the voice of frontline staff. Grounded in the principles of empowerment, partnership, ownership, equity, and accountability, our governance model fosters a culture where nurses lead change and drive excellence in patient care.
