The Transitional Year program at NYC Health + Hospitals/South Brooklyn Health is designed to serve as a prerequisite year for specialty training in Ophthalmology and Anesthesiology. This internship offers a critical period of professional development, supporting the transition from the application of pre-doctoral knowledge to independent clinical decision-making and skill acquisition.
NYC Health + Hospitals/South Brooklyn Health offers eleven intern positions and participates annually in the ACGME-accredited National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). The Transitional Year program operates in close coordination with the ACGME-accredited Anesthesiology program at South Brooklyn Health and the Ophthalmology program sponsored by SUNY Downstate Medical Center. Established in 2010, the program is fully accredited by the ACGME.
Program faculty are highly experienced in transitional year education, well-versed in ACGME requirements, and committed to teaching and mentorship. Research opportunities are available and tailored to align with interns’ individual interests.
Broad exposure to core clinical disciplines is a central component of the program and is essential for all physicians, regardless of their intended specialty. These core rotations include Internal Medicine, General Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics, and Emergency Medicine. A continuity clinic in primary care is available for interested interns. In addition, the program offers elective rotations in accordance with ACGME requirements for each specialty track.
The minimum period of service for the completion of the internship is 52 weeks.

- PGY-1 salary is $81,238 (plus meal allowance $3,800)
