The NYC Health + Hospitals/South Brooklyn Health Podiatric Medicine and Surgical Residency with Reconstructive Rearfoot and Ankle (PMSR/RRA) is a three year graduate training program approved by the Council of Podiatric Medical Education (CPME) under the direction of Yury Rotshteyn, DPM. We select graduates of recognized schools of Podiatric Medicine. This program is well-rounded, highly-structured and designed for the mature responsible, self-disciplined & self-motivated resident.
The rotational structure is designed with an increasing progression of responsibility toward patients and decision making in podiatric surgery and include advancing didactic study.
During the PGY-I and the first 6 months of PGY-II residents are provided a strong educational foundation in medicine & surgery. While on non-podiatric medical & surgical rotations, our residents function as integral team members. The rotations of the residency include: clinical podiatric medicine, podiatric surgery, orthopedic surgery, general surgery, internal medicine, endocrinology, anesthesiology, radiology, pathology, emergency medicine, vascular surgery, plastic surgery, anesthesia, and infectious disease.
Our purpose is to fulfill the educational requirements for each individual graduate’s surgical competency. It is also the purpose of this residency program to emphasize the humanistic quality for patient care and needs.
It is the responsibility of our program to:
- Prepare the podiatric resident for podiatric medical and surgical hospital practice with the emphasis for knowledge and skills to appropriately use other health professionals during the course of patient care.
- Provide intensive clinical and surgical education for the purpose of pursuing a career in podiatric medicine and surgery.
- To develop the skills, knowledge and attitude which will prepare the resident to conduct future clinical research in both the university and community environment.
- To prepare each resident during the course of the academic post graduate years for accepting the responsibilities of the next year’s curriculum and duties with eventual graduation from the residency program.
- Provide the skills and knowledge in preparation for the requirements leading to certification by the American Board of Podiatric Medicine and the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery.

Podiatry Clerkship
We offer a one-month clerkship program. This is a hands on rotation in which the clerk functions as an assistant on many operative cases in addition to participating in our resident education lectures. It is highly suggested that candidates interested in the CIH Podiatry Residency Program attend a month at our institution in our clerkship program. All applicants to the residency program are encouraged to at least visit the program.
Coney Island Wound Care Fellowship
Established in 2013, the Council of Podiatric Medical Education (CPME) approved Wound Care fellowship at NYC Health + Hospitals/South Brooklyn Health Hospital is a one-year intensive program full of diverse opportunities in both conservative and surgical wound management. Fellows work closely alongside faculty and staff managing their own wound care patients, running a wound care clinic and in addition attending outside rotations which include; Internal Medicine, Physical Therapy, Endocrinology, Nutrition, Pain management and Vascular surgery. Continuity of care is a vital part of the learning experience as a fellow at South Brooklyn Health Hospital.
The South Brooklyn Health Wound Care Fellow will work closely with the podiatric residents and is required to partake in educational rounds and case reviews. This provides the fellow the opportunity to not only advance their own knowledge but also develop and enhance his/her teaching skills by working directly alongside residents. Peer to peer mentoring is one of the cornerstones of the fellowship program.
The fellow is required to actively work on and submit a research proposal and produce a publishable manuscript prior to graduation in the area of wound care. Full institutional support is provided to the fellow throughout the research process and with IRB approval.
