Behavioral Health

NYC Health + Hospitals/Woodhull’s Department of Behavioral Health provides comprehensive mental health services to individuals and families. A continuum of services is offered that includes inpatient as well as outpatient psychiatric care. The department is staffed by a multidisciplinary team of psychiatrists, licensed clinical psychologists, mental health therapists, nurses, and social workers who work in collaboration to develop recovery plans tailored to meet the clients’ individual needs.

Inpatient Service

Our inpatient service is a 24-hour Office of Mental Health (OMH) licensed unit that provides services to individuals who require inpatient care in order to stabilize an acute psychiatric illness. We also provide Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) treatment for those patients with severe mental health conditions that have not responded to medication therapy for a specified period of time.

 Mobile Crisis Unit

Our team of behavioral health professionals, which includes social workers and trained case managers, provides emergency intervention services for adults, children, and families within the community. The Unit provides short term crisis intervention until clients are assessed for formalized behavioral health services, dependent on their individual needs. These professionals also work closely with schools and other community organizations to ensure that at-risk children receive the specific services they need. The team serves as a referral resource and works in a key role with the New York City Emergency Management Services City Wide and in the Bronx.

 Adult Outpatient Services

The Adult Outpatient Services Program provides mental health services to adults over the age of 18, including assessment, treatment planning, individual, group and family counseling, case management, and crisis intervention to reduce mental and emotional distress. Our mental health specialists provide adults with the support and skills needed to manage and recover from difficult emotional, addictive, and behavioral health issues.

Center for Integrated Health

The Center for Integrated Health is a combined medical/mental health clinic that is co-located within the Adult Outpatient Psychiatric Department (OPD). The program enables patients enrolled in OPD to receive services for their mental health and physical needs in one place. An array of services are offered, including screenings for chronic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, HIV testing, and cardiac, and respiratory disease.

Child/Adolescent Outpatient Services

This program provides outpatient behavioral health services to children ages five to 18 years and their families. Services include assessment, treatment planning, individual, group, family therapy, crisis intervention, discharge planning, and consultation services to the Department of Pediatrics.

Chemical Dependency Unit

This unit is a 19-bed medically managed detox inpatient service with extensive outpatient services, including smoking cessation, sobriety groups and therapy groups. The program has a multidisciplinary staff including CASACs, social workers, psychologists, nurses, and physicians.

 Assertive Community Treatment

Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) is an Evidence-Based Practice Model designed to provide treatment, rehabilitation, and support services to individuals who are diagnosed with a severe mental illness and whose needs have not been well met by more traditional mental health services.

The Woodhull ACT team provides on-site mental health treatment for these individuals who are homebound and unable to visit a clinic in the community. The program also provides support groups for patients.
