Welcome to the Department of Emergency Medicine at NYC Health + Hospitals | Jacobi and North Central Bronx (NCB). As the primary site for our Emergency Medicine residency program, our two clinical campuses serve as a central hub for high-acuity clinical training and a vital, compassionate safety net for our Bronx community. Jacobi holds a sacred place in the history of our specialty: we were the very first Emergency Medicine residency program in New York State and one of the first ten in the nation. For 50 years, our Department has been training residents independently and through combined models, producing hundreds of highly successful physicians and national leaders. I feel incredibly lucky to lead this department, which stands as the original heart of EM training in the region, backed by a stable, world-class faculty of over 60 board-certified Emergency Medicine and Pediatric EM specialists who dedicate their entire careers to teaching, mentorship, and patient centered clinical care.
My core vision for this Department is simple yet profound: to provide private-hospital quality care in a public-hospital setting. We consider it an honor and a privilege to care for our patients—particularly our vulnerable populations who often have nowhere else to turn—and we treat every individual with the highest levels of dignity, respect, and clinical efficiency. To achieve this, we leverage a massive, high-volume healthcare apparatus. Together, Jacobi and NCB treated over 159,000 patients last year, with Jacobi alone accounting for 112,000 visits, ranking it among the top 40 busiest emergency departments in the United States.
Our trainees thrive in an unparalleled learning environment that perfectly balances intense clinical acuity with robust structural support. As an ACS-accredited Level 1 Adult Trauma Center, Level 2 Pediatric Trauma Center, regional Burn Center, Advanced Primary Stroke Center, and PCI receiving center, we expose residents to the full spectrum of complex, time-sensitive pathology. Furthermore, our Department houses the region’s only 24/7 multi-person hyperbaric chamber, a regional snakebite center, a high volume toxicology service, and elite fellowship programs in Ultrasound, Simulation, and Pediatric EM. To ensure our residents can focus entirely on mastering medicine rather than managing administrative friction, we have heavily invested in our clinical infrastructure— recently adding over 65 nursing positions, dedicated ED pharmacists, 24/7 ED managers, and robust, round-the-clock safety and security systems.
