The Medical Toxicology Division at Jacobi Medical Center | North Central Bronx (NCB) provides cutting-edge clinical care, regional consultation, and specialized education. Our team consists of three board-certified Medical Toxicologists specializing in the evaluation and management of:
- Acute and chronic poisonings
- Recreational drug overdoses
- Complex withdrawal syndromes
- Adverse drug events
- Environmental and natural toxins (including snake envenomations and carbon monoxide poisoning)
We work in close, active collaboration with the New York City Poison Control Center to deliver comprehensive bedside care to poisoned patients across all hospital departments, including the Emergency Department, intensive care units, and general wards.
Unique Clinical Strengths & Collaborations
- The Jacobi Outpatient Toxicology Clinic: As the only clinic of its kind in New York City, we offer both in-person and telemedicine visits for patients navigating the subacute and chronic consequences of toxic exposures.
- Jacobi Snakebite Center: Our toxicologists help staff this specialized regional center, managing complex envenomations.
- Hyperbaric Medicine Partnership: We collaborate closely with Jacobi’s Hyperbaric Medicine division, integrating toxicological expertise with hyperbaric oxygen therapy for conditions like severe carbon monoxide poisoning.
- Addiction Medicine Integration: We are fully integrated with the Jacobi | NCB Addiction Medicine program, providing specialized consults and helping direct comprehensive care for complex substance use disorders and withdrawal states.
- Geriatric Trauma: The Medical Toxicology division partners with the Department of Trauma Surgery in providing Geriatric Trauma consultations. Polypharmacy is a common cause of falls and trauma in the elderly, and these patients can easily suffer recurrent falls, medical complications, or hospital readmission if medication adverse effects and interactions are not well addressed. This division provides coverage three days a week in evaluating the contribution of medications to the initial presentations of Geriatric Trauma patients while also managing inpatient medication regimens. Liaisons also help coordinate outpatient care with the primary care physicians of these patients whenever possible.
The Residency Experience
The Medical Toxicology service is a core educational pillar for our trainees. Residents from our program—alongside rotators from neighboring residency programs and medical students—gain robust, hands-on experience.
As a rotating resident, you will:
- Participate in bedside consultations for acute, high-acuity poisoning and withdrawal cases.
- Gain exposure to longitudinal care through our unique outpatient toxicology clinic.
- Engage in interdisciplinary rounds alongside toxicologists, emergency medicine faculty, and addiction medicine specialists.
