The Jacobi Snakebite Center is the only program of its kind in the Northeastern United States.
Founded in the early 1980s in close cooperation with world-class herpetologists at the Bronx Zoo and the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), our center serves as the premier regional and national hub for envenomation care. We are staffed 24/7/365 by Emergency Medicine physicians with advanced expertise in medical toxicology and the specialized management of venomous bites and stings.
Comprehensive, High-Acuity Care
Our center is uniquely equipped to handle the most complex envenomation cases:
- National Consultative Service: We provide expert regional and national phone consultations to clinicians managing complex envenomations.
- Regional Transfer Destination: We serve as the primary receiving facility for patients requiring specialized transfer from across the tri-state area.
- Dedicated Critical Care Pathways: We manage serious and life-threatening snakebites directly within our Emergency Department and inside Jacobi’s state-of-the-art Burn Intensive Care Unit (BICU).
The Residency Experience
Training at Jacobi means learning envenomation management at the most prestigious center in the region. Our residents do not just read about snakebites in textbooks—they gain unmatched, hands-on clinical experience.
As a resident, you will:
- Directly treat envenomation patients presenting to our high-volume Emergency Department.
- Serve as a consultant for regional transfer cases and national inquiries, formulating complex antivenom and monitoring protocols.
- Work side-by-side with and receive direct supervision from our board-certified Medical Toxicologists and envenomation experts.
