Anchored at NYC Health + Hospitals / Jacobi, our 4-year Emergency Medicine Residency combines high-volume, high-acuity urban emergency medicine with a rich 50-year history of training exceptional EM physicians and healthcare leaders. Serving an underserved Bronx community and treating over 112,000 patients annually, Jacobi provides an extraordinary foundation in clinical care. As a premier safety-net institution, high-volume Level 1 Adult Trauma Center, Level 2 Pediatric Trauma Center, and Regional Burn, Primary Stroke, and Hyperbaric center, Jacobi equips residents to master complex multi-system trauma, acute psychiatric crises, and time-sensitive medical emergencies. Through a carefully structured, progressive curriculum, residents move from foundational resuscitations to senior leadership—culminating in a final year focused on managing complex department flow, direct supervision, and bedside teaching.
Expert Faculty & Specialized Academic Expertise
Residents train alongside a robust team of over 50 Board-Certified and Board-Eligible Emergency Medicine and Pediatric EM physicians, many with subspecialty fellowship training. Our faculty are deeply engaged in scholarly work across Toxicology, Addiction Medicine, Advanced Ultrasound, Simulation/Education, Quality Improvement, and Research. Clinical training extends beyond the ED into world-class inpatient rotations, including the MICU, CCU, Trauma/SICU, Toxicology, and the Burn Unit, where residents learn directly from dedicated academic specialists. In our high-volume Pediatric ED—home to a long-standing Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellowship—residents receive focused, expert-led instruction from passionate educators committed to resident development.
Community Immersion at North Central Bronx Hospital
To prepare residents for practice in any clinical setting, the curriculum includes dedicated community rotations at North Central Bronx Hospital (NCB), located less than five miles away. NCB offers a distinct community ED experience where residents learn to navigate a resource-limited environment with reduced subspecialty support. Here, trainees build procedural independence, manage complex transfer logistics, and serve as the definitive bedside decision-makers. Because NCB operates under Jacobi’s umbrella, the transition is completely seamless—residents work with the same familiar Jacobi faculty in a more one-on-one setting, use the identical EPIC EMR system, and require no additional credentialing.
