Legacy Foundation.
Independent Future.
Built Here, Trained Here, Ready Anywhere.
We are thrilled to announce the Jacobi Emergency Medicine Residency Program is recruiting for a July 2027 Residency Class. While newly designated by the RRC, this program marks a return to our roots. Fifty years ago, Jacobi Medical Center launched the very first Emergency Medicine residency in New York State and one of the first ten in the nation, independently training legendary EM leaders for over two decades. As our legacy joint program with our private partner phases out over the next five years, Jacobi is proud to step forward as an independent program once again.
We are fully equipped for a seamless transition, backed by dedicated faculty, extraordinary clinical volume, deep institutional support, and unmatched subspecialty resources. We are recruiting medical students who are driven by a commitment to public hospital medicine and eager to train at a premier urban trauma center.
Program Highlights & Clinical Scope
Mission-Driven Public Health
As a flagship institution within NYC Health + Hospitals, our mission is dedicated to providing high-quality care to a diverse, vulnerable urban population. We are seeking prospective residents who share this passion and wish to train in a high-acuity, mission-centric environment.
Exceptional Volume & High Acuity
Combined with North Central Bronx (NCB), our Department treats over 159,000 ED patients annually. Jacobi alone accounts for over 112,000 visits—ranking among the top 40 busiest EDs in the nation. NCB will provide residents with the low resource ED experience.
Comprehensive Level 1 Infrastructure
Jacobi is an ACS-accredited Level 1 Adult Trauma Center, Level 2 Pediatric Trauma Center, Regional Burn Center, Advanced Primary Stroke Center, and PCI Center. The Department of EM runs the region’s only 24/7 multi-person emergency hyperbaric chamber.
Faculty Stability & Subspecialty Depth
Exceptional longitudinal mentorship: 45+ EM attendings, 15 Pediatric EM attendings, and a five-year turnover rate of <5%. Targeted recruitment has expanded expertise in simulation, ultrasound, toxicology, addiction medicine, global health, and research.
Subspecialty Fellowships & Expertise
Home to established fellowships in Pediatric EM, Simulation, and Ultrasound (featuring resuscitative TEE and advanced nerve blocks), alongside a robust Toxicology division that manages over 700 consults annually and serves as a multi-state snakebite referral center.
An Unrivaled Educational & Clinical Experience
Transitioning to an independent, single-department program allows us to offer close-knit mentorship, streamlined access to research projects, and customized career development. Extensive investments in ED support allows our residents to focus directly on patient care and learning.
