Professional Shared Governance

NYC Health + Hospitals is firmly committed to a professional practice environment that incorporates the Professional Shared Governance Evidence- Based Practice Model. Our nurse-led Professional Shared Governance initiative is designed to increase nurse engagement by ensuring that front-line care providers are actively empowered participants in system-wide decision-making. We have established 188 Councils with over 95 percent participation throughout our system.

Professional Shared Governance provides our nurses with the greatest opportunities to be engaged in the decision-making process, fostering collaboration and quality in nursing. The structure also is a powerful tool for nurse leaders – including unit and specialty practice leaders, CNOs and the CNE – to energize and motivate their teams.

Our culture focuses on mutual respect, autonomy and shared values, and recognizes that nurses are integral partners in the patient’s journey through their care experience. Through Professional Shared Governance, we are reinforcing our commitment to delivering the highest-quality healthcare.

Created in partnership with the New York State Nurses Association (NYSNA,) Professional Shared Governance allows us to advance evidence-based nursing practices throughout our facilities, serving as a framework to elevate performance, with enhanced efficiency and effectiveness at all levels
