Career Development and Training at NYC Health + Hospitals
We offer training opportunities in classroom and online settings on required and regulatory topics. In addition, employees have access to training programs to refresh, enhance or learn new skills, such as computer, management and leadership skills.
New Employee Orientation
Many new employees begin their careers at Corporate New Employee Orientation. During orientation, they:
- Meet our senior leaders and other new hires from across the system
- Participate in presentations to learn about our mission, strategic priorities, guiding principles, and your role in the patient experience
NYC Health + Hospitals: Leadership Academy
As a supervisor or manager at NYC Health + Hospitals, there are opportunities for intensive development and training through a nomination process, including the following:
Supervisor Development Program
Supervisors with at least one direct report can develop their supervisory skills in classroom training sessions and eLearning modules. Topics include:
- Critical thinking
- Linking department goals with the organization’s strategic goals
- Managing performance
Manager Enhancement Program
Managers who oversee a unit or department can develop their managerial skills in classroom training sessions and eLearning modules. Topics include:
- Managerial roles and responsibilities
- Performance management
- Strategic and operational planning
- Team management
Senior leaders at NYC Health + Hospitals facilities may participate in a cohort that meets six times for multiple days. The participants are:
- Nominated by their Senior Vice Presidents
- Selected through a competitive application process
Selected leaders are paired with a sponsor who mentors them throughout the program. The goal is to strengthen their leadership skills and develop skill sets needed to advance to the next level of their careers.

We offer training programs including simulation center training for clinical healthcare teams and Breakthrough training to enhance problem-solving for all employees.
Training for Clinical Healthcare Teams
The NYC Health + Hospitals Simulation Center uses the latest medical simulation technology and teaching methods to improve clinical learning, patient care and patient safety.
The Simulation Center helps healthcare professionals function as high-performing clinical teams. Training takes place in a variety of realistic medical scenarios in staged clinical environments such as the ICU, OR or ED.
By practicing procedures and engaging in teamwork scenarios in a controlled environment, our medical and nursing professionals refine the clinical, communication and collaborative skills they need to reduce medical errors and prioritize patient safety.

Breakthrough: Training for Problem Identification and Solving
At NYC Health + Hospitals, we offer a training program for all employees that provides them with the knowledge and skills to support, participate and engage in all levels of improvement work.
The Breakthrough program:
- Enables every employee to participate in problem identification and solving
- Provides a progressive path for employee professional and personal development
- Offers different training for each group of employees: leaders, doers and facilitators

Continuing Education entails educational activities which serve to maintain, develop, or increase the knowledge, skills, professional performance of licensed clinicians and produce positive patient outcomes.
The NYC Health + Hospitals Continuing Professional Education Program is an Accredited Provider for:
- Continuing Medical Education (CME); earn AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™
- Continuing Nursing Education (CNE); earn Contact Hours
- Continuing Social Work Education (CSWE); earn Contact Hours
Physician credits; Nursing and Social Work contact hours are earned through educational activities planned, developed and provided by expertly trained clinical staff. Professional educational activities earn credit or contact hours based on the hours of educational instruction and
Clinicians may register for learning sessions, review credits earned, and print certificates for earned credits or attendance.
