The Department of Dental Medicine is committed to supporting the NYC Health + Hospitals/Queens mission to provide high quality health care services to all persons regardless of their ability to pay. The Department of Dental Medicine provides comprehensive dental care to children, adults and seniors for diseases and disorders of the mouth, jaws and teeth. The care is provided in a modern, state of the art treatment center with all of the equipment needed to deliver comprehensive general dental care in an efficient environment.

The General Practice Residency Program

NYC Health + Hospitals/Queens supports a one-year General Practice Residency Program that is fully accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation. The program accepts six GPR residents from CODA accredited dental schools from across the nation.

Residents act as the primary provider in delivering preventative and comprehensive oral health care including treating dental emergencies. Clinical care is provided to patients under the supervision of general and specialty attendings in both the out-patient and in-patient setting. The Dental Department is open Monday through Friday 8:30am to 4:30pm and after-hours calls are taken by pagers.

Residents are provided a robust didactic schedule that includes lectures, literature reviews and case presentations to expand their clinical knowledge. Additionally, residents rotate through our Emergency Medicine and Anesthesia departments for a total of 80 hours each. In the Emergency Department, residents obtain and interpret chief complaints, clinical findings, and other diagnostic data in order to establish a medical assessment. In the Anesthesia Department, residents conduct preoperative assessments, patient monitoring, recognition and understanding of pharmacological agents, and assessment of patient recovery.

Goals and Objectives

  • Provide emergency and multidisciplinary comprehensive oral health care; provide patient focused care that is coordinated by the general practitioner; and direct health promotion and disease prevention activities.
  • Treat a broad spectrum of patients including pediatric, geriatric, medically complex and those with special needs. Uncooperative pediatric patients or those with special needs are offered treatment under general anesthesia in the operating room.
  • Function effectively within the hospital and within interdisciplinary health care teams including consults and referral.
  • Apply scientific principles to learning and oral health care. This includes using critical thinking, evidence or outcomes-based clinical decision-making in guiding best treatment and patient outcomes.
  • Utilize the values of professional ethics, lifelong learning, patient centered care, adaptability, and acceptance of cultural diversity in professional practice.
  • Understand the oral health needs of communities and engage in community service.
  • Residents will provide advanced level care in operative and restorative dentistry, periodontal therapy, endodontic therapy, oral surgery, dental emergencies, placing and restoring implants and pain and anxiety control techniques. Residents will be trained in managing medical emergencies, oral mucosal diseases, temporomandibular disorders, and orofacial pain.
