Ambulatory Care Chief Medical Officer
NYC Health + Hospitals
Dr. Wallach received his undergraduate degree in History (cum laude) from Duke University and his medical degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he also completed his residency training in Internal Medicine.
At NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue, he serves as the Ambulatory Care Chief. In this role, he leads the Ambulatory Care Service Line and works with the Clinic Chiefs to improve access, quality and the patient experience throughout Ambulatory Care. At NYC H+H, he serves as the Ambulatory Care Chief Medical Officer and the Deputy Chief Medical Officer for Clinical Services and Population Health. In these roles, he is responsible for leading the overall clinical vision for Ambulatory Care throughout the Enterprise in order to provide high quality medical care for patients as well as to align staff to meet the changing environment in healthcare: the shift to population health management, value-based purchasing, and risk pool management. He is a primary care physician and practices in the Bellevue Adult Primary Care Clinic where he has provided care to a cohort of patients for over 25 years.
Based on his work during the COVID-19 pandemic, in 2023 he was named to the U.S. Health and Human Services (HHS) Region 2 (New York, New Jersey, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands) Executive Steering Committee for the Regional Emerging Special Pathogens Treatment Center (RESPTC). The Region 2 RESPTC is one of thirteen nationwide Centers with enhanced capability and capacity to care for highly infectious diseases, such as Ebola, and serve as regional hubs for the U.S. National Special Pathogen System.
A clinician-educator, he is currently a Professor of Medicine in the Department of Medicine, Division of General Internal Medicine and Clinical Innovation (DGIMCI) at the NYU Grossman School of Medicine and serves as the DGIMCI Associate Director for Clinical Innovations and Clinical Affairs. In this latter role, he focuses on the Division’s clinical mission: optimizing the health outcomes of individuals and populations served by the DGIM practice sites. His research interests include quality improvement (clinical care and systems-based practices) and the use of unannounced standardized patients to evaluate the clinical milieu.
