Mental Health Service Corps (MHSC)

  • MHSC is 3-year workforce development program of the Mayor’s Office of Community Mental Health that aims to build a diverse generation of social workers, equipped to integrate behavioral health into a variety of settings
  • As of January 2020, MHSC is a part of NYC Health + Hospitals, the biggest public health system in our country
  • Early career clinicians are placed in a variety of clinical settings at H+H facilities throughout the 5 boroughs supported by clinical supervision and training

Program Highlights

Diverse Placement Opportunities

  • MHSC social workers are placed in:
    • Behavioral health settings such as outpatient, chemical dependency clinics, mobile crisis teams and partial hospitalization programs
    • Ambulatory medical settings such as adult and pediatric primary care, HIV services, and women’s health


  • MHSC social workers will receive training in a variety of evidence-based and patient responsive modalities:
    • Motivational Interviewing (MI)
    • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
    • Brief Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
    • Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT)
    • Collaborative Care
  • MHSC social workers will also receive professional development and career planning support

Providing Care during COVID-19

  • MHSC Corps Members are considered essential staff and have been vital in helping NYC manage the COVID-19 pandemic by continuing to provide in-person and telehealth mental health support.
  • Adequate PPE is provided to all staff.
  • Support and resources are available for all staff:
    • Emotional support hotline
    • NYC Employee Assistance Program
    • Facility respite centers

Licensure Support

  • MHSC social workers will have the opportunity to gain clinical hours toward licensure
  • Regular individual and group clinical supervision will be provided
  • CEU-eligible training
  • LCSW test prep and resources

Desired Qualifications

  • Ideal position for early career social workers who are interested in primary care and/or behavioral health settings
  • Position will require social workers to assess, diagnose and provide behavioral health treatment to a diverse patient population
  • Valid NYS LMSW required
  • Fluency in more than one language preferred
  • Commitment to 3 years with MHSC preferred
  • Commitment to learning and practicing new skills
