About Metropolitan

NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan is a full service community hospital that provides state-of-the-art care and leading edge technology in a modern environment. We provide culturally-sensitive care to patients from all five New York City boroughs in a welcoming and hospitable setting, emphasizing primary care medicine and utilizing the latest advances in medical science. Close patient supervision by a specially trained multidisciplinary team of health professionals helps ensure that patients receive the best, most effective care possible. From patients suffering from asthma or diabetes to women seeking early detection and treatment for breast cancer, we provide compassionate, appropriate, and affordable care.

NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan has been awarded Recognition by the National Committee for Quality Assurance Physician Practice Connections® – Patient Centered Medical Home™ Program. The Patient Centered Medical Home standards emphasize the use of systematic, patient-centered, coordinated care that supports access, communication, and patient involvement. The medical home designation recognizes Metropolitan’s model of care, where each patient has an ongoing relationship with a personal physician who leads a team that takes collective responsibility for comprehensive care of the patient. As a medical home, we ensure that coordinated care and long term healing replace episodic care based on illness.

We have been affiliated with New York Medical College since our founding in 1875, representing the oldest partnership between a hospital and a private medical school in the United States. We are part of NYC Health + Hospitals, the largest municipal hospital and health care system in the country.

We are proud to have a hard working, dedicated staff of high caliber physicians, highly skilled nurses, and administrators whose collaboration and cooperation help make Metropolitan one of the finest hospitals in New York City. At Metropolitan, each patient feels personally cared for and is treated with dignity and respect. Our attending physicians teach and lead research and keep up-to-date on scientific developments important to their patients, providing both comprehensive care and educational programs to members of our community. We are continuously engaging the community in educational events and promoting the health of local residents. Every year, we host a Family Health Day and a senior health fair, along with other numerous activities the community is encouraged to attend.

We are constantly working to enhance safety, improve efficiency, and eliminate waste, using an initiative known as Breakthrough, a set of principles founded in a philosophy that utilizes specific tools to provide value to our customers. We have incorporated Breakthrough as an ongoing and permanent process for improvement. Our recent areas of focus include: rehabilitation medicine, perioperative services, adult medicine, emergency care, behavioral health, and our revenue cycle.

NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan, along with other NYC Health + Hospitals facilities, received high quality ratings from the New York State Department of Health comparing key quality measures and treatments for specific conditions in hospitals statewide. We scored 97 percent for appropriate care in heart failure cases, 96 percent for heart attack care, and 94 percent for surgical infection prevention, an NYC Health + Hospitals initiative.
