NYC Health + Hospitals Appoints Sewit Teckie, MD, MBA, and Ted Long, MD, MHS, as System Chief Medical Officers

NYC Health + Hospitals’ Chief Medical Officers, Dr. Sewit Teckie and Dr. Ted Long

NYC Health + Hospitals today announced the appointment of two physician-leaders to the roles of System Chief Medical Officer. Sewit Teckie, MD, MBA, has been named System Chief Medical Officer for Clinical Affairs and Business Strategy, and Ted Long, MD, MHS, LHD (Hon), has been named System Chief Medical Officer for Clinical Services and Population Health. In these complementary leadership roles, Dr. Teckie and Dr. Long will partner to guide the clinical infrastructure, strategic growth, and population health initiatives of the nation’s largest municipal health care system. Dr. Teckie and Dr. Long assumed their new roles on March 2, 2026.

Their combined expertise will ensure our system remains at the forefront of accessible public healthcare.”

Dr. Teckie oversees NYC Health + Hospitals’ clinical affairs, clinical business planning, and strategic specialty services for the system. Her portfolio includes:

Provider Workforce & Affiliations: Overseeing the clinical affairs of 6,000 full-time medical staff and managing the Clinical Affiliate relationships.

Medical Education and Training: Includes the Office of Graduate Medical Education — which oversees one of the nation’s largest programs with 350 training programs for 2,900 trainees, Undergraduate Medical Education, and the Institute of Medical Simulation and Learning (IMSAL).

Specialty Services: Perioperative Services, Oncology, Women’s Health, Genetics, Pulmonology, Cardiology, and Palliative Care.

Operational Excellence: Leading the Transfer, Access, and Capacity Center (TACC), which supports over 52,000 patient transportation rides and over 10,000 annual patient transfers.

Dr. Long leads NYC Health + Hospitals’ clinical services across ambulatory and acute care, as well as the system’s overarching population health framework. His portfolio includes:

Ambulatory Care: Managing ambulatory care, including Gotham Health, one of the largest FQHCs in the country, and NYC Care, the nation’s largest and most comprehensive initiative to guarantee health care for New Yorkers.

Acute Care and Emergency Response: Leading acute care capacity management, laboratory and radiology services, clinical and specialty councils, and citywide emergency responses.

Population Health & Care Models: Managing population health data and strategy, as well as specialized programs for vulnerable New Yorkers including the Street Health Outreach + Wellness (SHOW) mobile program and Bridge to Home.

ACO Leadership: Serving as CEO of the NYC Health + Hospitals Accountable Care Organization (ACO), the only ACO in the state with 12 consecutive years of shared savings.

About Dr. Sewit Teckie

Dr. Teckie is a practicing radiation oncologist at NYC Health + Hospitals/Kings County who joined the system in 2022 as System Chief of Radiation Oncology. She has been instrumental in upgrading technological and clinical oncology services throughout the system. She previously served as Interim Director of Radiation Oncology at NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst and Vice President of Enterprise Clinical Operations.

Dr. Teckie is a Clinical Associate Professor at NYU Grossman School of Medicine. She holds degrees from Harvard College and Harvard Medical School and completed her residency at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. She also holds an executive MBA from Columbia University (2022), where she received the Dean’s Award with Distinction. Originally from Eritrea, Dr. Teckie’s background informs her commitment to the diverse patient population of New York City.

About Dr. Ted Long

Dr. Long is a practicing primary care physician in the Bronx who joined the system in 2018. He previously served as Senior Vice President of Ambulatory Care and Population Health. Notably, he served as Executive Director of the NYC Test & Trace Corps during the COVID-19 pandemic, designed the City’s Arrival Center for asylum seekers, and transformed primary care at NYC Health + Hospitals to expand primary care to more patients and achieve the best health outcomes in the history of the system.

Before joining the system, Dr. Long served as Senior Medical Officer at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and Medical Director at the Rhode Island State Department of Health. He is a Clinical Professor at in the NYU Dept of Population Health and on faculty at the Yale School of Medicine. He completed his undergraduate and residency training at Yale University and has authored over 60 peer-reviewed articles.
