Sickle cell disease is caused by a genetic mutation that affects a patient’s red blood cells. This mutation gives the red blood cells a crescent shape, which makes them fragile and causes them to lodge in blood vessels. The condition primarily affects individuals of African descent and remains one of the most common inherited disorders in the United States, impacting approximately 100,000 people nationwide and nearly 10,000 in New York State.
