HPV Vaccine

NYC Health + Hospitals urges parents to get their children inoculated with the HPV vaccine. This is very important because it prevents infection with the human papillomavirus (HPV), which can affect men and causes cervical cancer in women. In fact, HPV causes the second highest rate of cancer death in women. The vaccine against HPV can also help prevent other types of cancer in both men and women.

Although HPV infection does not always lead to cancer, thousands of people can avoid cancer with this vaccine. Learn more about cervical cancer care.

How We Care For You

NYC Health + Hospitals offers the vaccine to young people up to the age of 26, but earlier vaccination is better. It’s recommended that young people receive the vaccine between the ages of 11 and 12, or as early as 9-years-old. It’s important to be vaccinated before sexual activity begins, since that’s a major way people get HPV. Both boys and girls should be vaccinated for HPV, since the virus can cause other forms of cancer and warts.

If you or your family members are over age 26, it’s important that you have regular cancer screenings as part of your health care. Talk to us to learn more. We know this is a sensitive subject for children, parents, and affected adults, so we take special care when educating people about the virus and the vaccine.

Don’t hesitate, we want to help you and your family protect yourself against HPV.
