NYC Health + Hospitals/Gotham Health, Vanderbilt Celebrates Grand Opening of Diabetes Center

New center will help address the prevalence of diabetes in the northern sections of Staten Island, which has one of the City's highest rates of diabetes

NYC Health + Hospitals/Gotham Health, Vanderbilt today celebrated the grand opening its new Diabetes Center. According to the City’s Health Department’s Community Health Survey, the northern sections of Staten Island have some of the highest diabetes prevalence in the City. Services on-site will include, eye and foot care, virtual nutrition counseling, and the use of innovative technology, like the text-message based MITI (Mobile Insulin Titration Intervention) program to monitor blood sugar. Richmond University Medical Center is partnering with the clinic to provide vascular screenings on site and referrals to the hospital for expedient vascular surgery eval and treatment.
“The new diabetes center will complement primary care, women’s health, and pediatric health services at Gotham Health, Vanderbilt,” said CEO of NYC Health + Hospitals/Gotham Health Michelle Lewis.”
“In Northern Staten Island, 15 percent of the population has diabetes, 30 percent higher than the rest of New York City. Our new Diabetes Center is a critical tool in preventing and managing diabetes, to help make Staten Island healthier,” said Senior Vice President for Ambulatory Care at NYC Health + Hospitals Ted Long, MD. “Our public healthcare system prides itself off of meeting New Yorkers where they are with services they need. There’s no better example of that than our new Diabetes Center. We want to thank all of our partners and advocates that have made this possible, including RUMC.”
The Diabetes Center services will include:

  • Diabetes individual assessment, evaluation, care and treatment
  • Comprehensive diabetes self-management education and training
  • Virtual nutrition counseling to assist with individualized meal planning
  • Community resources for on-going care and support

NYC Health + Hospitals/Gotham Health, Vanderbilt opened in June 2018. The $28 million 18,000 square foot ambulatory care center offers affordable primary care for children and adults, mental health counseling and referrals, and opioid treatment.
