Health System's Senior Vice President for Managed Care and Patient Growth Named to Modern Healthcare's Top 25 Emerging Leaders List
Matthew Siegler is recognized for his role leading the financial turnaround of the nation's largest public health care system
Mar 22, 2022
NYC Health + Hospitals today announced that Senior Vice President for Managed Care and Patient Growth Matthew Siegler is among Modern Healthcare’s 2022 class of Top Emerging Leaders. Modern Healthcare annually honors emerging leaders all age 40 or under, who have made significant contributions in the areas of innovation and financial, operational and clinical excellence early in their careers. Siegler is recognized for developing and implementing the strategy behind NYC Health + Hospitals’ financial turnaround. When he joined the system in January 2018, NYC Health + Hospitals was facing a $1.8B structural deficit. Thanks to Siegler’s leadership, the system was able to close that deficit by growing revenue, expanding access, and focusing on value-based care rather than shutting down facilities or eliminating services. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Siegler helped lead the planning to open new intensive care and medical/surgical surge units as well as the patient level-loading process. Before the pandemic, Siegler oversaw the complete overhaul of NYC Health + Hospitals’ transportation system, which enabled the public health care system to level-load thousands of patients to prevent any of our hospitals from collapsing.
“We are extremely fortunate to have Matt Siegler on our leadership team. His contributions helped us eliminate a nearly $2B structural deficit that posed a significant threat to the public health care system’s operations,” said NYC Health + Hospitals President and CEO Mitchell Katz, MD. “Matt’s hard work and innovation also put us on the right path as COVID-19 began to grip the city two years ago. He is an effective advocate for our patients and staff, and I look forward to continuing to work with Matt to deliver quality care to all New Yorkers.”
“Thank you to Modern Healthcare for recognizing the amazing work of our NYC Health + Hospitals team,” said Siegler. “I’m inspired by our mission and our team members every day and it’s a true honor to help lead this system.”
Siegler joined NYC Health + Hospitals from Kaiser Permanente where he led key strategic and advocacy efforts across Kaiser’s commercial and government business, with a focus on public exchanges, large national employer groups, and planning for federal efforts to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act. Earlier, Siegler served in the Obama Administration as an operational, policy, and communications leader on the staff of the White House Domestic Policy Council. He has also served on the staff of Congressman Henry Waxman, the House Energy and Commerce Committee, and the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee. He is a graduate of Harvard Law School, Johns Hopkins University, and Harvard College.
Matt Siegler is a brilliant strategist. He completely understands the business imperative in health care, particularly among the safety net sites,” said NYC Health + Hospitals Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer Machelle Allen, MD. “While the public hospitals welcome all patients including those who are uninsured or underinsured, Matt has been able to leverage the high-quality care provided at these facilities to maximally align with value-based reimbursement. He encourages entrepreneurial thinking in that segment of health care, which traditionally were entitlement dependent. Most importantly, Mr. Siegler loves a challenge and brings fun and joy to the workplace. The lawyer who is the perfect partner for the clinician.”
“We could not be more excited for Matt Siegler to be selected as one of Modern Healthcare’s Top 25 Emerging Leaders,” said NYC Health + Hospitals Senior Vice President for Ambulatory Care and Population Health Ted Long, MD, MHS. “He has brought financial stability to the largest public healthcare system in the country, and in doing so has ensured that all New Yorkers will always have access to the highest quality care in our system, without exception.”
“All of us at NYC Health + Hospitals are incredibly proud of Matt for receiving this wonderful recognition,” said NYC Health + Hospitals Senior Vice President and Chief Quality Officer Eric Wei, MD, MBA. “Our NYC patients and communities have greatly benefited from Matt’s efforts to make high quality and safe healthcare accessible to all.”
“Matt’s strategic thinking, servant leader approach to problem solving, and insightful guidance has been invaluable as we serve patients and staff across the public health care system,” said NYC Health + Hospitals Senior Vice President of the Office of Facilities Development Christine Flaherty. “He has been a partner on our Housing for Health program and his support of our facilities work throughout the pandemic has been extremely helpful. It is a pleasure to have such a solid partner and colleague to collaborate with on transformative and strategic infrastructure investments.”
Each of the Top 25 Emerging Leaders will be profiled in the corresponding issue of Modern Healthcare as well as online at Modernhealthcare.com.
