Preparing for the Upcoming Open Enrollment Period, NYC Health + Hospitals Hosts Health Insurance Seminars for the Community

Free seminars help residents understand the best health plan options for individuals and families

Sep 26, 2016

New York, NY

Leading up to the open enrollment periods for Medicare and Marketplace, NYC Health + Hospitals and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) have teamed up for the sixth consecutive year to offer free seminars to help residents understand the health plan options available to them. Health insurance specialists from CMS will provide updates on Medicare (Parts A, B, C and D) and Medicaid programs, information about health care reform, the Affordable Care Act (ACA), and how to select and purchase affordable insurance on New York State of Health, the state’s official online marketplace to provide health insurance under the ACA.
Seminars will be held at five NYC Health + Hospitals locations across New York City and are open to the public. Caregivers, patients, community providers, NYC Health + Hospitals staff nearing the age of 65 and individuals who work with seniors, are encouraged to attend. Registration is free and required ahead of the event. Light refreshments will be served, and attendees will have the chance to win a fitness tracker.
“The days of waiting for people to get sick and seek treatment are long gone. Essential to the NYC Health + Hospitals’ mission is proactively connecting New Yorkers to care,” said Dr. Ram Raju, President and CEO, NYC Health + Hospitals. “That means doing more than ever before to ensure our communities have access to care and options to lead healthier lives. This is what our partnership with CMS is all about, educating New Yorkers about their health insurance options.”
The next open enrollment period for New York State of Health, when residents will be able to change their insurance plan or sign up for health insurance for the first time, will take place from November 1, 2016, through January 31, 2017. For people with Medicare, the annual enrollment period begins October 15, 2016, and ends December 7, 2016. During this time, people with Medicare can select a Medicare Advantage plan or prescription drug plan, or they can switch plans if they are already enrolled.
Attendees will receive information about:

  • The benefits of the Medicare program and how to apply;
  • The parts of Medicare – Part A: hospital insurance; Part B: medical insurance – outpatient visits, lab work, preventive services; Part C: health plans; and Part D: prescription drug coverage;
  • The Medicare appeals process;
  • The Medicare programs in place for people with limited income and resources;
  • Medicare information and resources now available online;
  • Updates on the New York State of Health;
  • Enrollment resources for the uninsured;
  • Basic overview of some of the changes under the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act (MACRA);
  • New coverage options available through ActionHealthNYC.

“With open enrollment season for both Medicare and Marketplace beginning in the fall, it’s a good time to gain the information necessary to make informed decisions about the best plans available,” said Raymond Hurd, CMS Regional Administrator. “Medicare, Medicaid and the Marketplace are cornerstone programs vital to the health and well-being of millions of New York City residents who rely on these benefits for quality health care.”
