NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi Receives Level I Trauma Center Verification from American College of Surgeons

Verification recognizes Jacobi's readiness and commitment to providing optimal trauma care

Jul 22, 2016

NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi has been designated by the American College of Surgeons (ACS) as a Level I Trauma Center. The ACS verification confirms that the medical center is equipped with the necessary resources to deliver the highest level of care to patients with the most serious injuries.
“We constantly examine and reexamine ways to improve the care we provide,” said Sheldon Teperman, MD, Trauma Medical Director. “This verification reaffirms that Jacobi provides trauma services that are second to none to the residents of the Bronx and Lower Westchester County. Our staff has worked tirelessly to achieve this distinction and the teamwork we demonstrate on a day-in, day-out basis saves lives,” he said.
The ACS verification process requires an on-site review by a team of experienced reviewers, who use the current Resources for the Optimal Care of the Injured Patient manual as a guideline in conducting the survey.
Jacobi received 17 acclamations for going above and beyond the College’s already stringent and exacting trauma care standards. ACS recognized Jacobi for the following strengths:

  • Excellent coverage of neurosurgery, providing expeditious care to patients in need
  • An operating room that provides quick care for fractures
  • A 24/7 radiology service
  • Dedicated support from the rehabilitation units
  • Impressive programs and research on gun violence (including the hospital-based “Stand Up to Violence” CureViolence program) and posttraumatic stress disorder

Established by the American College of Surgeons in 1987, the Verification Program for Hospitals promotes the development of trauma centers in which participants provide not only the hospital resources necessary for trauma care, but also the entire spectrum of care to address the needs of all injured patients. This spectrum encompasses the prehospital phase through the rehabilitation process. Verified trauma centers must meet the essential criteria that ensure trauma care capability and institutional performance.
