Musculoskeletal Ultrasound Program Provides Joint Pain Relief for Patients

Jun 16, 2016

New Technology Allows Jacobi Doctors to Target Pain and Provide Meaningful Relief
Bronx, NY

Over the past year, physicians at NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi have developed a new method to target and treat extremity pain using state of the art ultrasound technology.
Under the leadership of Beverly Johnson, MD, a Rheumatologist at Jacobi, the Musculoskeletal Ultrasound Training Program teaches doctors to target treatment for patients who are suffering from pain. The most common conditions include torn rotator cuffs, muscle tears, joint pain, gout, and muscle erosion. Using an ultrasound machine, purchased by the Jacobi Auxiliary, medical experts are able to target the pain patients are experiencing and then administer steroid injections —- to the affected area, often providing immediate relief from pain.
“When patients have severe and constant joint pain, it has a profound influence over their everyday life,” said Dr. Johnson. “They can’t climb stairs, they may not be able to walk, and their ability to carry items is likely compromised. These patients need fast and long-lasting relief.”
Now in its second year, the program has recently added four Fellows who help provide care for even more patients. The result is a dramatic increase in the number of patients being treated through the program. According to Johnson, more than 100 patients have been treated in the last year.
Dr. Tejas Sheth, a fellow within the program, says, “Without treatment, patients are disabled by pain. These injections not only relieve pain, they increase patient satisfaction and provide increased functionality.”
One such patient is Evadnie Campbell. Ms. Campbell suffers from intense knee pain .She came to Jacobi for her first treatment -in March -. Doctors used an ultra-sound machine to target the affected area and administered an injection to treat the pain.
“The treatment made a big difference,” said Ms. Campbell. “Immediately after my treatment, I was able to walk and climb stairs without being in constant pain.”
