NYC Health + Hospitals/Harlem Named Among the Nation’s “Most Wired” Hospitals

Jul 24, 2017

Harlem, NY

The American Hospital Association’s Health Forum has named NYC Health + Hospitals/Harlem one of the country’s “Most Wired” hospitals for successfully incorporating technology into health care delivery and for helping patients become more actively involved in their own health through the use of technology. The 19th Annual Health Care’s Most Wired® survey of 698 participants—representing an estimated 2,158 hospitals, or more than 39 percent of all hospitals in the U.S.—examines how organizations are leveraging information technology to improve performance for value-based health care in the areas of infrastructure, business, and administrative management; quality and safety; and clinical integration.

NYC Health + Hospitals/Harlem has various initiatives that have been implemented over the years utilizing the latest technology. The implementation of mobile technology along with computerized physician order entry (CPOE) has increased clinical capabilities to enhance patient experience, patient safety, and clinical decision support for high priority health conditions. Patients can now access visit summaries by logging into an online portal where they can view and download laboratory test results, patient education materials, and goals and instructions from the visit. For transitions in care between health care settings, a patient’s summary of care can also be sent to providers at other NYC Health + Hospitals. NYC Health + Hospitals/Harlem can use clinically relevant information from the electronic medical record to identify patient-specific educational resources and make those available to the patient. To improve patient experience and efficiency, patients receive prescriptions and request refills electronically. As a result, the hospital has seen great improvements in patient satisfaction assessments.

“In our journey to be a highly reliable organization, we have diligently worked to increase our investment in medical and technological innovations,” said Eboné M. Carrington, Chief Executive Officer of NYC Health + Hospitals/Harlem. “We strive to be consistent, accountable, respectful, excellent, and safe. The advancement of all of our core values is predicated upon our ability to use metrics to measure and technology to foster clinical and operational efficiencies. We are committed to helping the residents of the Village of Harlem to live their healthiest lives.”

“The Most Wired hospitals are using every available technology option to create more ways to reach their patients in order to provide access to care,” said Rick Pollack, president and chief executive officer of the American Hospital Association. “They are transforming care delivery, investing in new delivery models in order to improve quality, provide access, and control costs.”

Among the characteristics common among the hospitals recognized as Most Wired is their work to transform care delivery with knowledge gained from data and analytics.

The 2017 HealthCare’s Most Wired® survey was conducted between January 15 and March 15, and results are published in the American Hospital Association publication Hospitals & Health Networks.
