NYC Health + Hospitals/Woodhull hosted its Third Annual Healthcare Career Day, welcoming 174 registered student participants for a day focused on career exploration, mentorship, inspiration, and preparing young people for the transition from high school to the workforce.

Coordinated by NYC Health + Hospitals/Woodhull’s Volunteer Services Department, Career Day provided students with an opportunity to connect directly with healthcare professionals and learn about the wide range of careers that contribute to delivering high-quality patient care. In addition to physicians, nurses, and other clinical professionals, students were introduced to career pathways in Human Resources, Finance, Information Technology, Administration, Communications, Operations, Data and Analytics, Facilities, and other essential areas of healthcare.

The event reflects NYC Health + Hospitals/Woodhull’s continued commitment to investing in young people and helping students understand that a career in healthcare extends far beyond the bedside. Through conversations with hospital leaders and staff, students were encouraged to ask questions, explore their interests, learn about educational and professional pathways, and envision themselves as part of the future healthcare workforce.

Throughout the event, students participated in a series of interactive activities designed to build confidence and provide practical career-readiness skills. The program included a “Wrong Way, Right Way” interview skit demonstrating effective and ineffective interview techniques; “Woodhull Wears Fashion,” which modeled appropriate professional attire; and a “Let’s Talk About Interviewing” segment featuring Woodhull employees and practical guidance on preparing for job interviews.

Students also learned about entry-level healthcare career opportunities that may require a high school diploma and, in some cases, additional training without a four-year college degree. A career-mapping panel gave students the opportunity to interview healthcare professionals directly, ask questions about their career journeys, and gain insight into the education, training, and experiences that helped shape their paths.

The program also featured keynote speaker Pamela Lee, RN, Assistant Director of Nursing, and opened with a welcome video from Sandra Sneed, Chief Executive Officer, NYC Health + Hospitals/Woodhull, reinforcing the hospital’s commitment to mentorship, workforce development, and creating opportunities for the next generation.

“We were proud to host our Third Annual Career Day at NYC Health + Hospitals/Woodhull, a meaningful event that reflects our continued commitment to inspiring and guiding the next generation of healthcare professionals,” said Sandra Sneed, Chief Executive Officer, NYC Health + Hospitals/Woodhull. “It was a privilege to welcome so many bright and motivated students from our community who were eager to learn, explore career possibilities, and connect with our dedicated staff. By creating opportunities like this, we are helping to shape the future of healthcare with compassion, purpose, and possibility.”

“Career Day is an opportunity to show students that healthcare is powered by far more than what happens at the bedside. It takes dedicated professionals across operations, facilities, finance, technology, administration, and many other areas working together to support exceptional patient care,” said Clifford Miller, Chief Operating Officer, NYC Health + Hospitals/Woodhull. “By giving young people the opportunity to meet our teams, ask questions, and see firsthand how a hospital operates, we hope to broaden their understanding of the many career paths available to them and inspire them to envision a future in healthcare.”

Career Day was created with high school seniors in mind as they prepare to make important decisions about college, employment, training, and their future careers. The program emphasizes not only career awareness, but also the importance of mentorship, confidence, curiosity, and exposure to professionals who can help students better understand the opportunities available to them.

“Career Day was created to support high school seniors as they prepare to embark on an exciting and sometimes challenging journey into the adult workforce,” said Gwendolyn D. Murph, Director of Volunteer Services, NYC Health + Hospitals/Woodhull. “Reflecting on my own youth, I remember how overwhelming it could feel to navigate the many choices and possibilities that come with planning for the future. We want Woodhull Hospital to be a place where young people can explore those possibilities, ask questions, discover new opportunities, and gain a better understanding of the many paths available to them.”

NYC Health + Hospitals/Woodhull’s Human Resources team also highlighted the breadth of non-clinical careers that help keep a major healthcare organization operating successfully and encouraged students to remain open to professions they may not previously have considered.

“Human Resources proudly welcomes all students to our Third Annual Career Day—an exciting opportunity to explore the many career pathways that make healthcare strong and successful, from Human Resources and Finance to Information Technology, Administration, Communications, Operations, Data and Analytics, and so much more,” said Sophia Isaac, Chief Human Resources Officer, NYC Health + Hospitals/Woodhull. “We encourage the students to be curious, ask questions, dream big, and discover possibilities they may never have considered, because every career plays an important role in supporting patients, families, and our communities. We look forward to one day welcoming them to the Woodhull Hospital team.”

Clinical leadership reinforced the importance of sharing healthcare professionals’ passion for service with young people who may one day follow in their footsteps.

“We are so grateful to be able to do meaningful work that improves our patients’ health and well-being. There is nothing better than sharing our enthusiasm for this work with the next generation,” said Ross MacDonald, MD, Chief Medical Officer, NYC Health + Hospitals/Woodhull.

NYC Health + Hospitals/Woodhull’s annual Career Day has continued to grow since its launch. The inaugural event introduced Brooklyn students to clinical, administrative, ancillary, and support-service careers, while the second annual event welcomed more than 120 high school seniors and expanded opportunities for career exploration and direct engagement with hospital professionals.

Career Day also welcomed several supportive educational and community organizations to NYC Health + Hospitals/Woodhull, including the Brooklyn Public Library, St. Nick’s Alliance, CUNY- Lehman’s College, W.I.C.K., JOB Corp, and the Swedish Institute. Representatives shared educational materials, resources, and giveaways with participating students, helping broaden their exposure to academic opportunities, community services, and pathways that can support their future goals.

With 174 students registered for this year’s program, the Third Annual Career Day continues NYC Health + Hospitals/Woodhull’s efforts to strengthen connections between the hospital, schools, young people, and the communities it serves while helping build a future workforce grounded in service, compassion, and opportunity.
