NYC Health + Hospitals/Woodhull hosted a special celebration to honor Breast Cancer Survivors, bringing patients, staff, and community members together in a tribute to survivors’ courage, hope, and healing. Woodhull Hospital’s Chief Executive Officer Sandra Sneedjoined staff and guests to recognize the remarkable resilience of survivors and the compassionate teams who support them each day. The celebration featured a keynote address by Simone I. Smith — entrepreneur, philanthropist, designer, and 21-year cancer survivor — who shared her personal journey and words of encouragement with the attendees.
“I was deeply moved by Simone’s powerful testimonial and by the brave, beautiful stories shared by our patients,” said Sandra Sneed, Chief Executive Officer, NYC Health + Hospitals/Woodhull. “Their courage reminds us of why we do this work — to stand with our patients through every step of their journey. This celebration was a true reflection of the compassion, hope, and unity that define the Woodhull community.”

“As a cancer survivor, I understand how tough this journey can be — physically, emotionally, and spiritually,” said Simone I. Smith, 21-year cancer survivor and jewelry designer. “But I also know that God’s strength shows up in the moments we feel weakest. To every woman fighting today, know that you are not alone. You are warriors, wrapped in grace, courage, and the prayers of so many who believe in your healing.”
The program was led by Mistress of Ceremony Tracy Gayle, Associate Director, NYC Health + Hospitals/Woodhull and included remarks from Dr. Adedayo Ojo, General Surgery/Breast Care Surgeon, NYC Health + Hospitals/Woodhull, who offered reflections on the importance of early detection, continued support, and the advanced breast care services available at Woodhull. The American Cancer Society has found that if breast cancer is detected early, and is in the localized stage, the 5-year relative survival rate is 99%. Early detection can be achieved through performing monthly breast self-exams, and scheduling regular clinical breast exams and mammograms.
Guests were also treated to a performance by The KA Collective Duo — Atiba Kwabena Wilson and Kiyoko Layne — through the Arts in Medicine “Music for the Soul” initiative, generously supported by the Laurie M. Tisch Illumination Fund and Sing for Hope. During the closing reception, survivors, family members, and staff shared heartfelt stories and encouragement with one another.
Woodhull Hospital’s commitment to breast health extends far beyond this celebration. The hospital currently maintains an impressive 76% breast cancer screening rate, ensuring that more patients receive timely mammograms and early detection services. Woodhull offers a full continuum of breast cancer care, including lumpectomy, modified radical mastectomy, chemotherapy, hormonal therapy, radiation oncology, and comprehensive palliative services, all delivered by experienced clinical teams dedicated to patient-centered care.
