New York, NY

NYC Health + Hospitals today announced the open application period for the Clinical Leadership Fellowship, a one-year opportunity designed for post-residency graduates interested in administrative roles within the nation’s largest public hospital system. Fellows are assigned to teams within NYC Health + Hospitals’ offices of quality, population health, ambulatory care, managed care and patient growth, or medical and professional affairs to acquire hands-on, practical work experience. As part of their participation, fellows will be required to design and lead a quality improvement or population health project at their sponsoring facility. In addition, fellows provide clinical care to some of the city’s most vulnerable patients. The application deadline for next year’s fellowship is September 29, and applications will be accepted on a rolling basis.

“Now in its fifth year, the Clinical Leadership Fellowship offers mission-driven post-residency graduates the chance to work hand-in-hand with senior leaders to drive key operational improvements across our system,” said NYC Health + Hospitals Senior Vice President and Chief Quality Officer Eric Wei, MD, MBA. “The fellows bring their passion, experiences, and out-of-the-box ideas to support our system’s priorities and further our commitment to high quality care.”

“The Clinical Leadership Fellows are embedded into the day to day challenges our clinical leaders face, translating strategy through implementation to outcomes,” said NYC Health + Hospitals Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer Machelle Allen, MD.“Each year, a diverse group of fellows makes a demonstrable impact toward our mission, all while learning the skills to become the next generation of leaders at NYC Health + Hospitals.”

“Year after year, fellows are provided an unmatched opportunity to serve all New Yorkers, without exception, while learning how to run the largest public hospital system in the country,” said NYC Health + Hospitals Senior Vice President of Ambulatory Care and Population Health Ted Long, MD, MHS.“During fellowship, they are empowered to use their innovative ideas and experiences to advance system goals and makes changes that will make a difference on the frontlines.”

“The Clinical Leadership Fellowship gave me a deeper appreciation for the inner workings of the largest municipal hospital system in the country, provided me with meaningful mentorship, and taught me the importance of applying quality improvement skills to the continuously evolving field of medicine,” said 2022 – 2023 Clinical Leadership Fellow Dr. Tamara Kliot. “I am grateful to work and learn in a system with leadership who prioritizes the needs of its most vulnerable patients. This fellowship equipped me with skills outside of clinical medicine that have undoubtedly made me a better pediatrician.”

“The Clinical Leadership Fellowship opened my eyes to the bigger picture of how a healthcare system works. NYC Health + Hospitals is unique in its size, its challenging position as a public hospital system, and its close interaction with other City agencies,” said Clinical Director of the NYC Health + Hospitals/Woodhull Safety Net Clinic and 2021 – 2022 Clinical Leadership Fellow Dr. Michael Shen. “As a fellow, I was in a very unique position as an observer of great leadership and a participant of behind-the-scenes work.”

The curriculum includes fundamentals of leadership and administration, population health approaches to improving outcomes, team facilitation and change management, fundamentals of quality improvement and the science of quality measurement, developing and implementing quality improvement initiatives, designing safe systems, and building a “just” culture.

Previous fellows have played critical roles in NYC Health + Hospitals’ programming, such as:

  • Expanding virtual ExpressCare (telehealth services) for vulnerable populations.
  • Helping lead major systemwide initiatives related to improving mammography operations, expanding community health work programming, expanding midwifery services, and improving care for patients with sickle cell disease.
  • Supporting an initiative to build discharge navigators for congestive heart failure patients in an effort to ensure that more patients are discharged with the appropriate guideline-directed medication therapy.
