NYC Health + Hospitals/Kings County Unveils Large-Scale Mural Celebrating Healing, Resilience, and Hope

Patient’s Pathway brings vibrant colors and expressive artwork to the corridor connecting six buildings across the hospital campus

Oct 06, 2026

Brooklyn, NY – NYC Health + Hospitals/Kings County is bringing art into an everyday hospital space through Patient’s Pathway, a large-scale mural by artist Fadi Khoury, an artist-in-residence at the hospital. The mural spans the underground corridor and uses vibrant colors and layered textures to create an uplifting environment for patients, families, and staff.

The project grew out of Khoury’s ongoing volunteer residency at Kings County Hospital, where he creates visual art and site-specific dance installations as part of his commitment to integrating the arts into healthcare environments. After discussing the possibility of creating artwork in the hospital with Dr. Patricia Castro-Auvet, the idea of transforming the underground corridor into a more welcoming space for the thousands of people who use it was formed.

Drawing on his signature abstract expressionist style, Khoury’s mural translates movement into a visual representation of the healthcare journey. Khoury painted directly on the corridor walls using acrylic paint, designed to inspire optimism and forward movement while offering moments of calm in a space people pass through every day.

The mural also builds on FJK Dance’s longstanding community outreach at Kings County Hospital, where the organization serves as an artist-in-residence within the Behavioral Health Services, Wellness and Recovery Division. Through dance classes, performances, visual art and interactive installations, FJK Dance uses creative expression to encourage connection, cross-cultural dialogue and greater understanding of mental health.

The mural’s development reflects a collaboration between the hospital’s clinical and administrative leadership and its Artist-in-Residence. The artwork brings to life a shared vision for a more welcoming hospital environment and reflects Kings County Hospital’s commitment to the well-being of its community.

“Dance and visual art have the power to transform the spaces we inhabit and, in doing so, transform how we connect with one another,” said Fadi Joseph Khoury, Visual Artist, Choreographer & Artistic Director, FJK Dance. “At Kings County Hospital, this mural is inspired by the movement, resilience, and humanity of the people who walk these halls every day. As an artist and through FJK Dance, I am deeply committed to creating work that resonates with the hospital community—art that brings energy, beauty, connection, and a sense of belonging to both patients and staff. This project is a reflection of our belief that art can become part of the healing environment and celebrate the extraordinary human spirit within this community.”

“Integrating art into our basement corridor transforms an everyday space into a more welcoming, vibrant, and inspiring environment for our staff,” said Sheldon McLeod, Chief Executive Officer at NYC Health + Hospitals/Kings County. “Creative expressions like this bring energy and meaning to our workplace while reflecting our commitment to fostering connection, well-being, and a positive environment throughout Kings County Hospital.”

“Fadi is an extraordinary artist who understands profoundly the stress and trauma our staff and patients confront every day,” said Larissa W. Trinder, MPA, Executive Director, Arts in Medicine, NYC Health + Hospitals. “His work with the Kings County community shows the depth of what artists contribute to clinical teams. Patient’s Pathway joins one of the largest public hospital mural programs in the country, part of a historic collection that NYC Health + Hospitals has built since the WPA era as clinical infrastructure for healing. We are proud to welcome Fadi’s mural into that legacy and to celebrate his residency and the community that helped bring this vision to life.”

“Art is essential in medicine because healing is not only clinical,” said Dr. Patricia Castro-Auvet, Medical Director of Hospital Medicine and Director of Quality in the Department of Medicine, MD. “It is also about how a place makes you feel, and Fadi Khoury’s Patient’s Pathway fills the basement corridor that connects our entire campus with color, movement, and hope. For the patients who may travel through it on their way to care, it offers comfort and fosters healing, wellbeing and calm. For our staff, it brings beauty and joy while at work. I am especially glad this mural lives in the basement, alongside our engineering and facilities teams. They keep the hospital running every minute of every day, and nothing in this hospital happens without them. This mural celebrates them too. When we bring art into the heart of the hospital, we improve patient care quality and workforce wellbeing. The mural fosters love for everyone who walks these halls.”
