NYC Health + Hospitals/Kings County Launches the Brooklyn Neuroscience Center

The center will offer comprehensive treatment for neurological conditions and disorders that impact the nervous system at any age

NYC Health + Hospitals/Kings County today announced the opening of the Brooklyn Neuroscience Center —offering comprehensive care with interdisciplinary teams to treat disorders of the brain, spine, and peripheral nervous system of patients of all ages. NYC Health + Hospitals/Kings County is the primary teaching affiliate for SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University, training the next generation of physicians to provide high-quality neuroscience patient care in a collaborative environment.

The Brooklyn Neuroscience Center’s nine clinical services include:

  • Adult Neurology – Provides both inpatient and outpatient services to patients with headaches, low back pain, dementia, carpal tunnel syndrome, neuropathies, and a wide variety of neurologic conditions, including subspecialty practices in Neuroimmunology, Movement Disorders, Epilepsy, and Stroke. 
  • Epilepsy Center Serves patients with complex epilepsy and issues such as difficult-to-control seizures, pregnancy and epilepsy, bone health, and diagnostic uncertainty. NYC Health + Hospitals/Kings County is the first in the system to offer a ketogenic diet to patients with intractable epilepsy.
  • Stroke Center – A team of neurologists, neurosurgeons, emergency physicians, nurses, physical therapists, and interventional neuroradiologists provide high-quality care to complex stroke patients.
  • Neurocritical Care – The Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit and Neurocritical Care Consultation Services expertly care for critically ill patients with central and peripheral nervous system disorders.
  • Neuroendovascular – Employs minimally invasive techniques to diagnose and treat a wide variety of conditions including acute stroke, congenital and traumatic vascular malformations, arteriovenous malformations, cerebral aneurysms, and endovascular/interventional spine disease.
  • Neuroradiology – Offers specialty-trained expertise in imaging the nervous system using multiple modalities, including magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), positron imaging tomography (PET), and computerized tomography (CT).
  • Neurosurgery – Diagnose and treat complex neurosurgical conditions including brain tumors, degenerative spine disease, hydrocephalus, hemorrhagic strokes, and traumatic injuries to the brain and spine.
  • Pediatric Neurology – Treat children from newborns to young adults with a wide range of disorders of the nervous system.
  • Rehabilitation Medicine –  Provides a comprehensive multidisciplinary approach, including swallowing evaluations and gait training, focused on the skills a patient will need to navigate the home environment, including climbing stairs or getting in and out of a car.

The center consists of accredited and award-winning clinical services. The Traumatic Brain Injury Service, part of the American College of Surgeons, accredited Level 1 Trauma Center, sees patients with trauma complications to the brain. NYC Health + Hospitals/Kings County’s Stroke Center is marking eight years of receiving Gold plus recognition for excellence in stroke care by the American Stroke/Heart Association – longer than any other hospital in Brooklyn. The Neurocritical Care Service is also integral to the Joint Commission-accredited Stroke Center and the Level 1 Trauma Center.

NYC Health + Hospitals/Kings County also contributes to the advancement of knowledge in the neurosciences through its clinical and translational research program. They are a part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) STROKENET, SIREN, and Neuro NEXT research consortia in collaboration with SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University. Additionally, having numerous investigator-initiated projects in clinical and translational research in epilepsy and traumatic brain injury.
