NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi | North Central Bronx leadership and ophthalmologists celebrate funding for a new microscope secured by Borough President Gibson and Council Member Dinowitz

NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi | North Central Bronx CEO Christopher Mastromano announced today that, thanks to the generous support of Borough President Vanessa L. Gibson and Council Member Eric Dinowitz, the health care system has purchased a $600,000 advanced surgical microscope for its North Central Bronx campus. The new Zeiss Opmi Lumera 700 microscope will produce highly detailed images which will improve imaging, surgical workflow, and provide enhanced ophthalmic care to Bronx patients. The microscope will be operational early next year.

The state-of-the-art microscope provides detailed, distortion-free, computer enhanced images that allow surgeons to get a better visual of patients’ retinas. The enhanced imaging allows doctors to operate more precisely on corneas and retinas, improving patient outcomes and surgical efficiency. At the North Central Bronx campus, most of the procedures that will use the new microscope will be for cataract surgeries. This procedure removes the natural lens of the eye when it becomes cloudy, and replaces it with a transparent artificial lens to help restore clear vision. In 2025, over 200 patients were treated for cataracts at North Central Bronx.
