NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi | North Central Bronx Honors the 25th Anniversary of 9/11 with Memorial Service and Video Recounting Staff’s Memories Working at Jacobi’s Trauma Center

NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi | North Central Bronx hosted a memorial service in the 9/11 Memorial Garden on Jacobi’s campus for the 25th Anniversary to honor the lives lost, recognize the bravery of emergency responders, and to remember the unity of New Yorkers coming together. Attendees were given carnation flowers to lay on the memorial plaques, along with a commemorative pin to mark the 25th Anniversary. Following the memorial service, attendees were directed towards a breakfast where a video was played of hospital staff recounting their memories, working at Jacobi on September 11, 2001.
The program began with opening remarks by NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi | North Central CEO Christopher Mastromano, followed by a SUNY Maritime Color Guard presentation and the Pledge of Allegiance. Moments of silence were taken at 8:46 a.m. and 9:03 a.m., when each of the twin towers were hit. Although attendees were somber thinking about the tragedy at Ground Zero, students of the P.S. 108 choir sang the National Anthem beautifully, reminding the community of hope and resiliency before the names of Bronxites lost on 9/11 were recited by local elected officials.
Following the remembrance of Bronxites, NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi | North Central Bronx Community Advisory Board Chairs Charmaine Graham and Robert Seitz recited the poem, Meet Me in the Stairwell written by Stacey Randall. A poem telling the story of 9/11 from the perspective of God, with the message that God was with everyone on that day, the victims, their families, and all who were watching. Father Hippolytus Duru, Chaplain at Jacobi, then led a 9/11 Remembrance Prayer followed by Assistant Director of Communications Diane Arroya singing Amazing Grace.
NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi | North Central Bronx Senior Leadership Team walked up to the memorial plaques in pairs, to place the wreaths, followed by attendees joining in laying carnations. To close the service, the student choir sang and NYC Health + Hospitals/North Central Bronx Ambulatory Project Manager Gabriel Mujica played his trumpet as attendees walked over to a breakfast and viewing of a video recounting staff’s memory working at Jacobi on September 11, 2001.
