NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst Expands Pediatric Care to Include Hematology and Infectious Disease Care

Dr. Mary Boyle, an expert in pediatric infectious diseases, will treat patients with complex conditions that require specialized care

NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst today announced an expansion to its pediatric specialty care. Mary Boyle, MDjoins Elmhurst Hospitalas an Attending Physician and specialist in treating pediatric infectious diseases, and Kristina Emeghebo, MD will serve as an Attending Physician and specialist in pediatric hematology. Both physicians are experts in the fields and will enhance the quality and depth of care provided by Elmhurst Hospital’s Department of Pediatrics.

Dr. Emeghebo, who will also practice at NYC Health + Hospitals/Queens, specializes in diagnosing, treating, managing and monitoring blood disorders in infants, children and young adults. At Elmhurst Hospital she will work closely with parents and families to manage chronic conditions and develop long-term care plans for children living with blood conditions. Her practice will include managing anemias, bleeding disorders such as hemophilia, platelet function disorders, clotting disorders, and immune-related conditions. She also plans to develop community-based education and screening programs for blood disorders as well psychosocial support for patient families.

Dr. Boyle’s practice will focus on treating pediatric patients with complex infections that require specialized care, including tuberculosis, HIV, MRSA, bone and joint infections, congenital infections, and travel and tropical infections such as malaria, dengue, chikungunya, typhoid, and schistosomiasis. She will also provide guidance on infection prevention and on how to protect immunocompromised children.

Dr. Mary Boyle received her MD from Trinity College, University of Dublin in her native Ireland, followed by a Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, and a Master of Public Health from the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University. She completed her Pediatric Residency and Chief Residency at NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi and the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, and a Pediatric Infectious Diseases Fellowship at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. She has experience in global health, having participated in clinical and research activities in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, and Nepal.

Dr. Kristina Emeghebo received her medical degree from Morehouse School of Medicine, completed her Pediatric Residency at Nassau University Medical Center, and completed her Fellowship in Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at Northwell-Cohen Children’s Medical Center.  She is board certified in both General Pediatrics and Pediatric Hematology/Oncology. In addition to her numerous publications and grant-funded research focused on sickle cell disease, patient and family-centered care, and disparities in health care for New York State and the Northeast region, she also directly manages inherited chronic and acute hematologic illnesses for children in and around New York City.

Today’s announcement builds on the robust care offered for infants, children, and adolescents at NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst. The hospital’s Pediatric Emergency Department cares for over 55,000 infants, children and adolescents and their families yearly, making it one of the busiest pediatric emergency departments in New York City. Elmhurst Hospital’s Pediatric Ambulatory Service consists of a total of 12 primary care and subspecialty clinics, including a Pediatric Ambulatory Clinic, Adolescent Services, and a Developmental Clinic. In addition, the Pediatric Inpatient Service cares for all children admitted at NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst, including those who require general or special surgery. The Pediatric Newborn Service, consisting of 4 nurseries and a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, cares for the more than 4,500 infants born at NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst each year.
