NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst has been re-designated a Center of Excellence by GO2 for Lung Cancer, recognizing the hospital’s commitment to expanding access to lung cancer screening and improving care for people at risk for or living with lung cancer. The designation recognizes the efforts of Elmhurst’s Lung Cancer Screening Program team, whose physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners and other healthcare professionals work year-round to increase awareness of lung cancer screening and connect community members with potentially lifesaving care.
For the Elmhurst Hospital team, that work extends well beyond the confines of the hospital’s campus. Throughout the year, team members participate in community outreach events across Queens, providing education about lung cancer, sharing information about who may be eligible for screening, and helping community members understand the importance of early detection. The team also works to make screening more accessible by helping community members connect with appointments and appropriate follow-up visits.
“This recognition reflects the hard work and dedication of our Lung Cancer Screening Program team, who are intensely passionate about bringing awareness, education and access to traditionally underserved communities,” said NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst CEO Alina Moran. “In addition to screening patients and providing care inside the hospital, they are out in the community educating our neighbors about lung cancer screening and helping connect them to care. I am incredibly proud of this team and the difference they are making in the lives of our patients and their families.”
“Being recognized as a Lung Cancer Screening Center of Excellence lets our community know that we hold our program to the highest standards so that in turn we can help them have the best care possible, no exceptions,” said NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst Chief of Pulmonary Medicine and Critical Care Dr. Alfredo Astua. “Congratulations to the entire Elmhurst Lung Cancer Screening Program team on this well-deserved recognition and for their ongoing commitment to bringing lifesaving screening and care closer to home for Queens residents!”
Lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer death in the United States, but early detection through screening can significantly improve survival rates. As a GO2 Center of Excellence, Elmhurst Hospital joins a national network of more than 350 Centers of Excellence committed to advancing lung cancer care. Through the network, healthcare teams share expertise, resources, research and best practices and collaborate on efforts to improve health outcomes and quality of life for people affected by lung cancer.
The Elmhurst Lung Cancer Screening Program is part of the hospital’s broader commitment to health equity and ensuring that all New Yorkers have access to high-quality healthcare. Elmhurst Hospital’s program focuses on identifying lung cancer at its earliest and most treatable stages through advanced low-dose CT screening technology, patient navigation, and comprehensive follow-up care. Eligible individuals typically include adults between the ages of 50 and 80 with a significant smoking history. Since its creation just a few years ago, the program has helped nearly 1,000 patients achieve piece of mind regarding their lung health via this program.
