NYC Health + Hospitals/Community Care Announces New Home Health Simulation Satellite

NYC Health + Hospitals/Community Care announced that a new Home Health Simulation Satellite site, is now available to home health nurses. The site gives home health nurses a way to practice various scenarios, from routine procedures to emergencies, in a simulated home or other community-based setting. Nursing simulation is a training technique that provides an opportunity for students and qualified nurses to practice responding to various clinical situations and then to reflect on how they performed, what went well and what needs to be changed. This is key to their development of clinical skills and judgement, including critical thinking, decision-making, and problem-solving skills.

Home care nurses will be able to practice the following skills at the new Home Health Simulation Satellite site:

- Bilirubin Sample Collection
- Hand Hygiene – Alcohol-Based Hand Rub
- Hand Hygiene – Soap and Water
- Intramuscular Injection
- Manual Blood Pressure Assessment
- Medication Administration Indwelling Urinary Catheter Insertion
- Negative Pressure Wound Therapy
- Pleurex Drainage
- Surgical Wound Management
- Tracheostomy Care
- Unna Boot Compression Dressing
“Our new Home Health Simulation Satellite replicates a single room occupancy unit, which is typical of many of our patients’ living spaces. It’s a real-world environment where new and experienced home health nurses can come to practice their skills in a setting with limited space.” said Marie Previl, Nurse Educator for NYC Health + Hospitals/Community Care.
As the home health industry continues to evolve to include more home-based models of care, understanding the complexity of home health and the home health nurse’s role and responsibilities in care delivery, coordination, transitions, and interprofessional practice are critical. Nurse educators take on the responsibility to educate nursing students about these roles and responsibilities, and about the needs of patients and families in the home and other community-based setting.
