NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue Receives American Cancer Society Grant to Support Transportation for Cancer Patients

Second consecutive year of funding helps reduce barriers to cancer care and improve patient outcomes

May 06, 2026

NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue’s Cancer Center team supports patients throughout treatment, with social workers coordinating transportation to ensure access to care.

NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue announced it has received a $10,000 transportation grant from the American Cancer Society (ACS) to support patients undergoing cancer treatment. The funding will help provide rides to and from appointments, ensuring patients can access timely and consistent care.

“Providing equitable access to care is central to Bellevue’s mission,” said NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue Chief Executive Officer Eric Wei, MD, MBA. “We are proud to continue our partnership with the American Cancer Society whose support helps remove barriers to care and improves outcomes for the patients and communities we serve.”

At Bellevue Hospital, the transportation program is coordinated by a multidisciplinary team that works closely with patients throughout their treatment journey, helping ease the burden on patients and families while supporting better clinical outcomes.

“For many of our patients, something as simple as getting to an appointment can become a major obstacle during cancer treatment,” said Jennifer Wu, MD, Director of the Cancer Center at Bellevue Hospital. “This funding helps remove that burden, allowing patients to focus on healing while we ensure they can access the care they need every step of the way.”

This award marks the second consecutive year Bellevue Hospital has been selected for funding through the American Cancer Society’s transportation grant program. In 2025 alone, Bellevue provided 115 rides through the grant—demonstrating its tangible impact in reducing missed appointments and improving patients’ access to critical cancer care.

“Transportation obstacles or the cost of a hotel room should not be barriers that determine the survival of those needing cancer treatment,” said Arif Kamal, MD, Chief Patient Officer for the American Cancer Society. “Partnering with health systems and organizations across the country to provide funding to deliver the direct assistance needed helps to fill these equity gaps and improves cancer outcomes.”

NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue is accredited as an Academic Comprehensive Cancer Program by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer, ensuring patients have access to high-quality cancer diagnosis, treatment, care coordination, and support.
