NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue Installs New CT Scanner in Emergency Department, Enhancing Speed and Precision of Patient Care
Apr 23, 2026

NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue today announced the installation of the first of two new computed tomography (CT) scanners in its emergency department, part of a nearly $7 million investment to strengthen rapid diagnosis and improve patient care in one of the country’s busiest emergency departments. CT scanners are among the most commonly used diagnostic tools in emergency medicine, providing fast, detailed, cross-sectional images of the body that enable clinicians to quickly identify injuries, strokes, internal bleeding, infections, and other potentially life-threatening conditions. Bellevue Hospital’s Emergency Department treats approximately 110,000 patients each year, many of whom require immediate and highly accurate imaging.
“CT imaging is essential to delivering emergency care,” said NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue Chief Executive Officer Eric Wei, MD, MBA. “As an Emergency Medicine physician, I know that being able to make fast, informed decisions can make all the difference for patients in crisis. This investment ensures that our teams have the tools they need to provide the highest quality care to every patient who comes through our doors.”
“We are proud to provide our teams with the most advanced tools available to care for the city’s most vulnerable patients,” said NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue Chief of Radiology Evan G. Stein, MD, PhD, FACR. “The installation of the new CT scanner in our Emergency Department is transformative for our trauma and stroke programs. For our trauma victims, the speed of this system is life-saving. We can now perform a high-definition, total-body scan in seconds with notably lower radiation doses. By combining this level of speed and diagnostic power, Bellevue Hospital is ensuring that every patient who enters the emergency department receives the fastest, safest, and most accurate care available.”
“Bellevue Hospital is a critical New York City institution, and their Emergency Department serves more than 110,000 New Yorkers each year regardless of their health care coverage,” said New York State Senator Kristen Gonzalez. “This almost $7 million investment will further amplify their incredible work of diagnostic and life-saving health care. As a proud representative of this hospital, I’m committed to continue fighting for the integrity and funding of safety net hospitals like Bellevue.”
“As the beacon of our public health care system, Bellevue Hospital continues to play a critical role delivering lifesaving care and keeping New Yorkers safe and healthy,” said New York State Assembly Member Keith Powers. “This investment in new CT scan equipment will help our health care professionals make faster, more accurate diagnoses and strengthen public health across New York City. I’m proud to fight for Bellevue Hospital to ensure it has the resources it needs to serve every New Yorker.”
“I’m thrilled to join the incredible emergency room physicians, nurses, and support staff here at Bellevue Hospital to celebrate the Emergency Department’s new CT scan,” said Manhattan Borough President Brad Hoylman-Sigal. “CT scans are essential to delivering rapid, accurate diagnoses during life-threatening emergencies – especially in one of Manhattan’s busiest ERs. I’m thankful to Bellevue Hospital’s CEO Dr. Eric Wei and his executive team for prioritizing this investment, and to the entire NYC Health + Hospitals workforce for their continued dedication to saving the lives of their fellow New Yorkers.”
“Bellevue Hospital has been the backbone of emergency care in New York City for nearly three centuries, and this investment helps ensure it remains that way,” said New York City Council Member Virginia Maloney. “These new CT scanners will mean faster diagnoses, better outcomes, and more lives saved for the over 110,000 New Yorkers who rely on Bellevue Hospital’s Emergency Department each year. This nearly $7 million is a smart investment modernizing one of the busiest EDs in the city and the only Level I trauma center below 68th Street in Manhattan.”
“The addition of this CT scanner strengthens the reliability and resilience of our emergency department operations,” said NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue Chief Operating Officer Erfan Karim, MPH. “Designed for speed and efficiency, it also includes ergonomic features that support our clinical teams and enhance patient comfort. Given the volume we manage, dedicated imaging capacity within the ED reduces patient transport, minimizes disruptions, and improves overall flow. With a second scanner coming online soon, we are expanding capacity and ensuring consistent access to imaging. We remain committed to delivering seamless, high-quality care and making Bellevue the hospital of choice for all New Yorkers.”

Bellevue Hospital has the highest volume and highest acuity trauma cases in New York City. As the only Level I Adult Trauma Center and Level II Pediatric Trauma Center below 68th Street in Manhattan, Bellevue Hospital continues to invest in advanced technology and infrastructure to meet the growing needs of New Yorkers and deliver exceptional care in even the most urgent situations. The hospital has long been a leader in emergency medicine and is a Joint Commission-designated Comprehensive Stroke Center.
