New York, NY – NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue today announced the completion of its new Emergency Department computed tomography (CT) suite with the installation of a second state-of-the-art CT scanner. The project completes a nearly $7 million investment to strengthen rapid diagnosis and improves patient care in one of the country’s busiest emergency departments. The completion of the project significantly expands the hospital’s imaging capacity, enabling clinicians to diagnose strokes, traumatic injuries, internal bleeding, infections, and other potentially life-threatening conditions more quickly and accurately while improving patient flow. Bellevue Hospital’s Emergency Department treats approximately 110,000 patients each year, many of whom require immediate diagnostic imaging. With both new scanners now operational, the hospital has greater imaging capacity and built in redundancy, helping ensure patients receive timely diagnostic imaging around the clock.

On average, the hospital performs approximately 225–250 CT scans per day. In addition to the Emergency Department scanners, the Department of Radiology operates four additional CT scanners across the department. These units primarily support inpatient and outpatient services, and are frequently utilized for specialized and higher-complexity studies including transcatheter aortic valve replacement planning, image-guided biopsies, and CT colonography, which require longer scan times and dedicated protocols.

“The installation of our second CT scanner completes Bellevue Hospital’s modernized Emergency Department CT suite,” said NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue Chief Executive Officer Eric Wei, MD, MBA. “With a fully operational two-scanner CT suite, our teams can diagnose and treat critically ill patients faster while ensuring uninterrupted access to advanced imaging around the clock for the thousands of New Yorkers who depend on Bellevue Hospital each year. This investment reflects our ongoing commitment to providing the highest quality emergency care through advanced technology and modern infrastructure.”

“The completion of Bellevue Hospital’s Emergency Department CT suite is a major milestone for our Emergency Department and Department of Radiology,” said NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue Chief of Radiology Evan G. Stein, MD, PhD, FACR. “These state-of-the-art systems allow us to obtain exceptionally detailed images in seconds while reducing radiation exposure for patients. The additional capacity means we can care for multiple critically ill patients simultaneously, shorten wait times, and maintain uninterrupted imaging services even during periods of extraordinary demand. This investment further strengthens Bellevue Hospital’s nationally recognized trauma and stroke programs.”

“I’m thrilled to join the incredible emergency room physicians, nurses, and support staff at Bellevue Hospital to celebrate the Emergency Department’s second new CT scan.  CT scans are critical to delivering timely, accurate diagnoses during life-threatening emergencies – especially in one of Manhattan’s busiest ERs. I’m grateful to Bellevue Hospital’s CEO Dr. Eric Wei and his executive team for prioritizing this investment, and to the entire NYC Health + Hospitals workforce for their continued dedication to saving the lives of their fellow New Yorkers,” said Manhattan Borough President Brad Hoylman-Sigal.

“Bellevue Hospital has been the backbone of emergency care in New York City for nearly three centuries, and this investment helps ensure it remains that way,” said New York City Council Member Virginia Maloney. “These new CT scanners will mean faster diagnoses, better outcomes, and more lives saved for the over 110,000 New Yorkers who rely on Bellevue Hospital’s Emergency Department each year. This nearly $7 million is a smart investment modernizing one of the busiest EDs in the city and the only Level I trauma center below 68th Street in Manhattan.”

“Bellevue has always been there for New Yorkers in their greatest moments of need, and this investment ensures it can continue delivering the highest standard of emergency care when every second counts,” said New York City Council Member Harvey Epstein. “The completion of this modernized CT suite expands lifesaving imaging capacity, reduces delays in diagnosis, and strengthens Bellevue’s ability to care for multiple critically ill patients at once. As the home of one of the busiest emergency departments and the highest-acuity trauma center in New York City, Bellevue deserves world-class facilities that match the extraordinary dedication of its doctors, nurses, and staff. I’m proud to support investments that keep Bellevue at the forefront of emergency medicine and ensure every New Yorker has access to the timely, high-quality care they deserve.”

“The completion of Bellevue’s new Emergency Department CT suite marks an important operational milestone and commitment to continually strengthening the infrastructure that supports emergency care.  With both CT scanners now in service, our emergency department is better equipped to support parallel care for multiple critically ill patients, reduce delays in diagnostic decision-making, and respond to the unpredictable demands of one of New York State’s busiest Level I Trauma Centers. These investments strengthens the systems that support patient care and helps ensure we can deliver timely treatment when every minute matters,” said NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue Chief Operating Officer Erfan Karim, MPH.

Bellevue Hospital has the highest volume and highest-acuity trauma cases in New York City. As the only Level I Adult Trauma Center and Level II Pediatric Trauma Center below 68th Street in Manhattan, Bellevue Hospital continues to invest in advanced technology and infrastructure to meet the growing needs of New Yorkers and deliver exceptional care in even the most urgent situations. The hospital has long been a leader in emergency medicine and is a Joint Commission-designated Comprehensive Stroke Center.
