NYC Health + Hospitals Announces All 11 Hospitals Again Recognized by the American Heart Association for Quality Care

The awards recognize hospitals around the nation for science-based practices in heart failure, heart attack, stroke, diabetes, and resuscitation

Aug 03, 2022

NYC Health + Hospitals today announced all 11 of its hospitals were again recognized by the American Heart Association for commitment to quality care in heart failure, heart attack, stroke, diabetes, and resuscitation. The Association’s Get with the Guidelines and Mission: Lifeline awards recognize hospitals nationwide that adhere to science-based practices and provide the highest quality care. NYC Health + Hospitals earned these recognitions by meeting specific quality achievement measures for the diagnosis and treatment of heart failure and stroke patients at a set level for a designated period. These measures include evaluation of the proper use of medications and aggressive risk-reduction therapies. Before discharge, patients also receive education on managing their heart failure and overall health, and receive other care transition interventions.

“When it comes to treating heart attack and stroke, every second counts,” said NYC Health + Hospitals Chief Medical Officer Machelle Allen, MD. “Our 11 hospitals have once again been recognized by the American Heart Association for providing outstanding, life-saving care.”

Nearly half of all adults in the U.S. have experienced some form of cardiovascular disease – including heart attack, stroke and heart failure. For patients with conditions that are severe enough to be transported or admitted to a hospital, time is critical.

“Bellevue is proud to be recognized by the American Heart Association for our commitment to the best evidence-based care for our patients with heart disease and stroke,” said NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue Chief Medical Officer Nate Link, MD. “Our exceptional doctors, nurses, and care teams are able to provide the highest level of individualized treatment. This acknowledgment is a testament to our dedicated clinicians and our quality management team, and their focus on maintaining the highest standards of care.”

“NYC Health + Hospitals/Coney Island is honored to be recognized by the American Heart Association for utilizing best practices in treating stroke, diabetes, and heart failure. Our multidisciplinary teams of caring and compassionate providers excel in caring for patients with congestive heart failure, diabetes, and stroke,” said NYC Health + Hospitals/Coney Island CEO Svetlana Lipyanskaya, MPA. “We have made significant investment in primary care to address chronic diseases such as diabetes, and have onboarded several life-saving services and programs, including a new cardiac catheterization lab, a new percutaneous coronary intervention program, and certification by the Joint Commission as an Advanced Primary Stroke Center. Adding these life-saving clinical services ensures that care for heart attack and stroke – for which a quicker response means a better outcome – is available right here in our community. We continue to strive every day to make sure that excellent care is available for all residents of South Brooklyn and beyond.”

“We are enormously proud of these recognitions from the American Heart Association for our successes in helping our patients control their blood pressure and diabetes, and also avoid complications from strokes, heart disease, and heart failure,” said NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst Chief Executive Officer Helen Arteaga Landaverde, MPH. “Our physicians, nurses, and dietitians work closely with our patients to help them make lifestyle adjustments that include a focus on exercise and healthy eating, and we are pleased that our efforts are having a real impact in underserved communities throughout Queens. We look forward to continuing to empower our patients to make choices that will lead to good outcomes.”

“As the CEO of NYC Health + Hospitals/Harlem, I am the hospital’s biggest cheerleader.  Our health care professionals use data driven science to improve clinical outcomes for our patients dealing with chronic heart failure, stroke and heart failure associated with Diabetes Type 2,” said NYC Health + Hospitals/Harlem CEO Georges H. Leconte. “Thank you to the American Heart Association for highlighting our hospital with the Get With The Guidelines-Heart Failure Gold, Gold Plus Stroke & Target Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll awards.   We pledge to continue to be our community’s healthcare partner with laser focus on addressing their health needs and social determinants of health. The Association’s acknowledgment furthers our ability to amplify the great things happening at our hospital.”

“I commend both our Cardiac and Stroke teams on achieving and maintaining these important distinctions,” said NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi and North Central Bronx CEO Christopher Mastromano. “When patients enter our doors, they deserve to know they are receiving first-rate care. These independent designations demonstrate we are providing the care our patients need.”

“I am extremely proud of our dedicated team’s commitment to ensuring our patients receive high-quality patient-centered care at NYC Health + Hospitals/Kings County,” said NYC Health + Hospitals/Kings County CEO Sheldon McLeod. “Thank you to the American Heart Association for recognizing our demonstrated performance in improving cardiovascular health and quality of life for the families and community we serve.”

“NYC Health + Hospitals/Lincoln has attained the gold standard in each category because we treat each patient with commitment, compassion and collaboration,” said NYC Health + Hospitals/Lincoln CEO Christopher Roker. “This approach meets the holistic needs of each patient which generates a stronger and more positive response. Team work reaps healthier outcomes and we have found this approach to be very effective.”

“This American Heart Association designation illustrates our dedication to improving care for those affected by stroke in our community,” said NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan CEO Cristina Contreras. “This recognition would not be possible without the dedication of our highly skilled and committed interdisciplinary care teams who are committed to delivering advanced stroke treatments to patients quickly and safely. We are proud to be part of a health system that is working every day to improve care and outcomes for the patients we serve.”

“I am immensely proud that the American Heart Association has recognized NYC Health + Hospitals/Queens for best practices in heart failure, stroke and diabetes,” said Neil J. Moore, MBA, MPA, FACHE, Chief Operating Officer, NYC Health + Hospitals/Queens. “These are diseases that have the greatest impact on the communities we serve, and we are especially gratified to know we are providing high-quality care in such important disciplines.  As we continue to grow our patient population, we will continue to build on this progress in order to ensure our patients can and will lead their healthiest lives going forward.”
