STAT! 2011 will benefit New York City’s public healthcare facilities, celebrate HHC’s 37,000 employees, and help raise awareness about the important role that our public hospitals and healthcare facilities play in the city of New York. A portion of the proceeds from this year’s series of events will also help launch Guns Down, Life Up, an initiative to combat gun violence.
“New Yorkers need our public hospitals, and at HHC, we’re working in many ways to keep quality healthcare accessible for everyone,” said HHC President Alan D. Aviles. “STAT! events help raise awareness about the essential work we do and the challenges that HHC hospitals face in difficult financial times. They also help to raise funds that support our facilities, as well as serve as a visible reminder that our hospitals are essential to the lives of New Yorkers, regardless of their ability to pay or their immigration status.”
HHC hospitals are also working to promote the safety and welfare of New Yorkers through an initiative called Guns Down, Life Up, which will include a collaboration with the Mayor’s Office and its Young Men’s Initiative (YMI) as well as partnerships with community-based and violence-interrupter organizations, to combat gun violence in communities across New York City. With support from STAT!, Guns Down, Life Up will be first implemented at Harlem Hospital Center and Kings County Hospital Center, and will incorporate best practices and collaborations with YMI and community groups to reduce gun violence among adolescents and young men. The program will seek to address the complex needs of urban youth through hospital-based interventions for victims of violence as well as friends and family members; collaborations with and referrals to services from community groups; mentoring and programs to address youth development; and links to supportive services.
