For Its Commitment to Its Nurses, NYC Health + Hospitals/South Brooklyn Health Receives Prestigious “Pathway to Excellence” Designation

Second hospital in Brooklyn, third in the city to achieve recognition for its commitment to positive practice environment and culture of sustained excellence

Only 202 health care organizations in the world have earned the designation

NYC Health + Hospitals/South Brooklyn Health today joins a premier group of health care organizations that have received the prestigious Pathway to Excellence designation from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).The Pathway designation is a globally recognized credential that highlights NYC Health + Hospitals/South Brooklyn Health’s commitment to creating a healthy work environment where nurses feel empowered and valued. ANCC uses a rigorous three-year process to evaluate continuous improvement in the areas of shared decision-making, leadership, safety, quality, well-being, and professional development. Further, it recognizes facilities where nurses are engaged and involved – all of these facets result in improved patient outcomes, better safety, higher job satisfaction, and reduced turnover. NYC Health + Hospitals/South Brooklyn Health becomes the second hospital in Brooklyn and only the third health care facility in New York City to join a select group of just 202 health care organizations who have earned Pathway to Excellence designation worldwide. The announcement comes on the heels of the recent NYC Health + Hospitals/Kings County ANCC designation, which was the first hospital in to Brooklyn receive the designation.

Our South Brooklyn Health nurses have had an amazing and sustained impact upon the broader New York City health care landscape. Their energy, enthusiasm and intensity truly have made a difference, bringing outreach programs, educational efforts and health screenings to the people that need it the most. Our Brooklyn-based nurses have embraced leadership positions in the community, spearheading advocacy campaigns for health education, preventative care, social justice reforms and other critical issues facing the nursing profession. The Pathway designation is a global credential that highlights NYC Health + Hospitals/South Brooklyn Health’s commitment to creating a healthy work environment where nurses feel empowered and valued. South Brooklyn Health’s nurses are an integral part of the health care team. The Pathway to Excellence designation recognizes select facilities where nurses are engaged and involved, resulting in higher job satisfaction, reduced turnover, improved safety, and better patient outcomes.

The Pathway to Excellence designation recognizes South Brooklyn Health and its nurses for their efforts to enhance quality of care and the patient experience.

To qualify for the Pathway to Excellence designation, NYC Health + Hospitals/South Brooklyn Health worked closely with nursing leadership over the past three years to prepare an exhaustive application detailing how it underwent a thorough review process and then implemented initiatives that were integrated into South Brooklyn Health’s practices, policies and culture. This application process included having South Brooklyn Health nurses complete a confidential online survey validating that the ANCC standards have been incorporated into nursing practice at South Brooklyn Health.

The ANCC Pathway to Excellence designation indicates that NYC Health + Hospitals/South Brooklyn Health has successfully adopted the ANCC’s Pathway standards into South Brooklyn Health’s daily practice and culture. These standards include: shared decision-making; leadership; safety; quality, well-being, and professional development.
