New York, NY

NYC Health + Hospitals President and CEO Mitchell Katz, MD today announced the appointment of Eric Wei, MD, MBA as interim CEO of NYC Health + Hospitals/Harlem. Dr. Wei will temporarily replace outgoing CEO Eboné Carrington who served as CEO for the hospital. NYC Health + Hospitals will conduct a national search to fill the executive position for the hospital permanently. Dr. Wei’s interim CEO appointment is effective September 7, 2021.
Throughout her ten year tenure at Harlem Hospital my staff and I have been grateful for the leadership and dedication that Ebone’ Carrington has demonstrated to the service delivery and healthcare outcomes of the community,” said Manhattan Borough President Gale A. Brewer. “On behalf of the Borough of Manhattan, I would like to extend a warm welcome to Dr. Eric Wei as Interim CEO while a national search is conducted.”
“We are fortunate to have Eric take on this additional responsibility,” said Dr. Katz. “Not only has he worked shifts in every Emergency Department across our system, including at Harlem Hospital, he most recently served as interim CEO of NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst. His clinical expertise and extensive knowledge of our operations will ensure a seamless transition.”
“We are sincerely grateful to Eboné for her 10 years of service to NYC Health + Hospitals, heroic leadership through the COVID-19 pandemic and for the vital contributions she has made to the Harlem community. We are very proud that her expertise has been tapped to improve health care delivery beyond our city,” said Dr. Katz.
“I am looking forward to working with the health care heroes of NYC Health + Hospitals/Harlem during this transition period,” said Dr. Eric Wei. “I’ve been able to witness the culturally competent healthcare that is provided to members of this diverse and historic community and am thrilled to be a part of that day-to-day operations.”
NYC Health + Hospitals will conduct a national search for a permanent CEO with the help of a search committee chaired by NYC Health + Hospitals/Lincoln CEO Christopher Roker. Once a new CEO is chosen, Eric will return to his job as Chief Quality Officer.
While he serves as interim CEO at Harlem Hospital, Dr. Wei will turn over the day-to-day operations of the Office of Quality and Safety to Hillary Jalon, MSs who will serve as interim Chief Quality Officer for the health system.
“Dr. Eric Wei is a revered clinician with years of experience in patient care, and I cannot think of anyone more qualified to lead NYC Health + Hospitals/Harlem during this time of transition,” said Congressman Adriano Espaillat. “Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Wei ensured adequate operations as a NYC Health + Hospitals senior leader and made indelible contributions to our city’s recovery. I applaud Eboné for her heroism during the height of the public health crisis and look forward to the continued growth of NYC Health + Hospitals/Harlem under this new leadership.”
