President and CEO of NYC Health + Hospitals Mitchell Katz, MD has been named on City & State’s “2021 NYC Power 100” list, which recognizes the most influential leaders in advocacy, business, and government. Each year, the publication recognizes the most prominent leaders across the city and state who serve as influencers in education, health, real estate, non-profit and philanthropy, and law.  Dr. Katz is ranked 11th for leading the city’s public hospitals during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic providing New Yorkers with care amidst stockpile issues, testing, contact tracing and now vaccine distribution. He shares the recognition with former NYC Health + Hospitals Chief Population Health Officer, now City Health Commissioner Dr. Dave Chokshi, who is also leading the City’s pandemic response and vaccine distribution. Earlier this year, Dr. Katz was recognized on City & State’s 2021 Health Power 100 and as well as receiving the ‘Labor Hero 2020’ Award by the Organization of Staff Analysts.
“Recognitions such as City & State’s ‘2021 NYC Power 100’ reflect the incredible workforce of healthcare heroes at NYC Health + Hospitals and the commitment of leaders like my colleague Dr. Chokshi to move the city forward during this crisis,” said President and CEO of NYC Health + Hospitals Mitchell Katz, MD. “I am proud to lead a hospital system that serves especially the most vulnerable among us, with the utmost care and consider it an honor to continually improve the health and well-being of all New Yorkers during and beyond the COVID-19 pandemic.”
Dr. Katz was appointed President and CEO of NYC Health + Hospitals in January 2018. During this time, Dr. Katz has focused on advancing the transformation of the public hospital care system with numerous new initiatives to expand access to primary care services, reduce administrative costs, invest in more front-line clinical staff, and build financial stability. In September 2020, NYC Care, a healthcare access program for New Yorkers who are not eligible for or cannot afford health insurance, went live city-wide four months ahead of schedule under Dr. Katz’s stewardship.
Dr. Katz’s initial transformation strategy helped set the groundwork for the public hospital system to combat the challenges of the unprecedented global health crisis, COVID-19. During the pandemic, the system was able to more than triple its ICU capacity, stand-up a COVID-19-dedicated hotline to help mitigate dangerous overcrowding in the system’s emergency departments, transition nearly all existing ambulatory care appointments to telemedicine, and help establish the city’s Test & Trace Corps. The public hospital system is now also providing critical support to facilitate the City’s roll-out of COVID-19 vaccines to those who are eligible.
