In Xiao Ru Li’s 30-year nursing career, she has always worked to provide the best patient care. But, she’s not sure she’s doing anything extraordinary. That’s expected of all nurses, she says.
“I’m doing what a lot of nurses do all the time; it is expected,” she says, noting that she believes nursing is “an ideal career path.”
Currently working as a staff nurse in the Surgery Department at NYC Health + Hospitals/Gotham Health, Gouverneur, Li has a wide range of responsibilities, including general surgery, colorectal surgery, urology, ENT and podiatry.

Colleagues call Li a tireless worker, a “model of professionalism,” and praise her for having a positive attitude that encourages everyone around her to work hard.
“Of all the nurses I have encountered over the past 20+ years since I started working at NYC Health + Hospitals facilities, I feel that Xiao Ru stands out as the best,” said a co-worker. “She is truly exceptional at her job, and the health care profession is lucky to have her.”
Another colleague notes, “Xiao Ru Li has impressed me since I started working in the Gouverneur Surgery Department 12 years ago. She works tirelessly to make sure the patients understand the procedures.”
Li says she feels her biggest strength is showing empathy to her patients, and thereby ensuring greater patient satisfaction in the care that they receive.
