Excellence in Clinical Nursing

Creating an environment of comfort, trust and respect can go a long way towards alleviating stressful situations, and Phyllis Holder-Francisco has exemplified this approach in her 38-year nursing career.

Working as Head Nurse in the Psychiatry/Behavioral Health unit at NYC Health + Hospitals/Woodhull, Holder-Francisco uses humor and empathy in her relationships with patients and co-workers. “Being in the mental health sector, having a sense of humor helps to promote positivity in stressful situations, allowing the team and patient to know that I am there for them,” she points out. “In addition, my team, the patient and relatives are comfortable approaching me, even in uncomfortable situations, because they know that I will be compassionate, empathic and will listen to them.”

Holder-Francisco believes strongly in communication, promoting a dialog between the medial team, patient and relatives to create care plans that ensure the best and safest treatment. “I believe that patients should be treated with compassion and empathy, as well as being involved in their care plan,” she declares. “In addition, all members of the medical team must be accountable for patient care and treat each patient as a person. I promote treating the patient as individual and create the best possible treatment plan, so that they can be discharged to live a normal life.”

“I believe in a patient-centered approach with coordination and collaboration between the medical team, patient and family to ensure the physical comfort and emotional wellbeing of the patient.”

Holder-Francisco became interested in nursing as a teenager, when a neighbor who was a nurse encouraged her to pursue the profession. “She answered all my questions and guided me on my path to becoming a nurse,” she recollects. “It was important to me to care for people and assist them in being comfortable with their physical and mental wellbeing.”
