Excellence in Clinical Nursing

Many children are inspired by their parents, but for Charles Duru, it was his children who inspired him to become a nurse.

“Visiting the emergency room every three to five days with my first child for a common cold challenged me to pursue a career in nursing,” he recalls, noting that he has translated his own feelings into a nine-year career of serving pediatric patients and their families.

“I am passionate about my job and very committed to our patients and the community; I will go the extra mile and make every effort to help our patients,” he comments. “Placing the patient first makes them and their family feel loved, and working at a patient’s level of needs and understanding makes them feel very valued.”

“Seeing my pediatrics populations growing with me in experience gives me great pleasure in my nursing career.”
Charles Uchenna Duru, Assistant Head Nurse

Duru currently is a Charge Nurse at NYC Health + Hospitals/Gotham Health, Morrisania, where he has been instrumental in creating innovative procedures for improving patient access. “I developed a system to call scheduled patients to find out if they were coming or not,” he explains. “Once they confirmed they were not coming, we could call those who needed appointments sooner to get them scheduled. This reduced our ‘no show rate,’ and also increased patients’ satisfaction and increased access.”

Duru himself says he values “working in a community that really appreciates your impact,” and providing compassionate, high-quality care to all patients.

“Together with the entire team at Morrisania, I educate patients and provide guidance about the importance of regular preventive care visits, follow ups and immunizations,” he says, noting that he is constantly seeking to increase his knowledge base and keep an open mind about new innovations.

“Change is a constant parameter that the nursing profession has to embrace,” Duru adds. “Patients’ needs and care are increasing on a daily basis, motivating me to keep learning and playing a critical role in providing high-quality care to our patients.”
