The DAISY Foundation Award for Nursing Advancing Health Equity

Providing individualized care with a positive attitude is an overriding concern for Catalina Gonzalez, one of this year’s recipients of The DAISY Foundation Award for Nurses Advancing Health Equity.

“Nursing should be one-on-one care and all assessments should be in person,” Gonzalez declares. “I treat the patients the way I want to be treated when I go to my own provider.” This includes completing pre-visit planning, closing the care gaps for patients, and making sure that patients are receiving all of their screenings and vaccinations.

A fluent Spanish speaker, Gonzalez was inspired to become a nurse by her mother. “Her selflessness and how she cared for people gave me inspiration,” she recalls, adding “I enjoy giving back to my patients.”

“Mitigating health disparities are important so that everyone gets equal care, and everyone is treated fairly.”
Catalina Gonzalez, Staff Nurse

Gonzalez currently works as a staff nurse for NYC Health + Hospitals/ Gotham Health, Roosevelt, and says she develops a trusting rapport with her patients, noting that her strengths include her “bubbly personality,” and being “a people person.”

“I have a no-nonsense approach with a spoonful of sugar to show that I care and have compassion for my patients,” she explains. “My best moments are when my patients come back, and I see that they are well and healthy.”
