Managing patients with chronic diseases can be a demanding and exacting responsibility, but it is also a fulfilling and rewarding one for Cecilia Smith, who has been a nurse for 30 years, the past 10 with NYC Health + Hospitals.
Currently a Staff Nurse at NYC Health + Hospitals/Harlem, Smith declares, “I am passionate about nursing,” adding, “That’s all I ever wanted to do! I love helping and taking care of people.”
“Nursing has allowed me to work with patients and their families, and at the same time gives me a sense of fulfillment,” she explains. “Some of the best moments in my nursing career were working in hematology, oncology, hospice care and transplant.”
Smith says she strongly believes in providing consistent care, keeping her patients “on track” with their chronic disease management programs. She says she strongly believes in NYC Health + Hospitals ICARE values, noting, “Compassion always resonates with me, due to my passion for nursing.”
Nominators point to Smith as a strong advocate for her patients, saying she ensures that patients’ care plans are “carefully followed to optimize good health.” They also say she is quick to share successful techniques and methodologies with the care team.
Smith embraces new technologies as a way to improve and upgrade patient care. “I believe we have an opportunity to enhance nursing with the technology we see today,” she points out. “From tele-visits to the EPIC electronic medical records system, we have the ability to provide care in a variety of ways. I will adapt by learning these new technologies and approach my nursing profession with what I learn.”
