Enhancing patient care through basic bedside nursing has been an overriding motivation for Belarmino M. Esperanza during his 31-year nursing career, a factor that was inspired by his mother.

“I was fortunate to experience the care and love of my mother and I felt that if I could impart that to other people, then it could spark hope to everyone,” he relates.

Currently serving as a Staff Nurse at NYC Health + Hospitals/Carter, Esperanza came to the U.S. from his native Philippines with a ground of like-minded nurses, seeking to advance the profession.

He says the experience was both exciting and challenging, noting that he began his American experience “living in a dormitory in Goldwater Memorial Hospital at Roosevelt Island, fresh off the boat with the rest of the Filipino nurses. We navigated the culture shock of being in America together, adapting to the ever-changing world of healthcare: some challenges I met successfully with flying colors, others I miserably failed.”

Esperanza takes a self-effacing approach to his own career, noting that, “The best judge of the strengths I bring to nursing would be the people I deal with.”

Nominators say Esperanza consistently goes “above and beyond” in performing his nursing duties, calling him, “compassionate,” “organized,” and “detail-oriented.” One nominator commented, “Mr. Esperanza consistently demonstrates superior knowledge and skills in the care of ventilator and complex patients. He is an expert in respiratory management as part of the weaning team. He is also an expert in the care of patients on telemetry.”

Other nominators pointed to Esperanza’s teamwork and leadership as strong points, noting that he is “highly respected by the interdisciplinary team.”

Esperanza says he incorporates all five of NYC Health + Hospitals ICARE values into his nursing practice. “You cannot have one core value in itself without the others,” he explains. “One value is dependent upon the rest; all five values appeal to me on the same level.”

For himself, Esperanza says he believes in “ going back to the basics, spending more time at the bedside to enhance the patient care experience.”
