Patient advocacy is often considered to be a hallmark of dedicated nursing, and it is one that Anthony Wiggins has eagerly embraced during his five-year nursing career.

“I’ve always been an advocate for public health and health education for the community that I was raised in,” he explains. “I am also a strong advocate for sexual education among the LGBTQ+ Black and Brown community. This is important to me because many of the people in this population get looked down on; they don’t have many options and often lack the education they need when making critical choices in their lives.”

Wiggins currently serves as Supervisor of Nurses for NYC Health + Hospitals/Gotham Health, Cumberland, where he says one of his biggest strengths is “my ability to juggle many tasks safely.”

Nominators praise Wiggins as “always vigilant,” “professional,” and kind and say he takes a hands-on approach to patient care. “He exemplifies nursing excellence in promoting quality patient care because of his personal dedication and commitment,” one nominator states.

“He promotes teamwork by encouraging Just Culture and teaching the necessary work flow when and where necessary,” points out another nominator.

Wiggins embraces NYC Health + Hospitals ICARE values in his leadership role, noting that he views compassion as the most personally significant. “I believe that compassion is what nursing is built on,” he asserts. “Patients look to you for reassurance and trust.”

He also credits others with helping him shape his nursing career in a positive fashion. “I know that I wouldn’t be the nurse I am today without the leaders that I have had in the past, and I thank my staff that trust decision-making at Cumberland.”

“Working as a nurse has been one of the most rewarding jobs I have ever had,” Wiggins continues. “Being able to connect with my patients mentally and gaining their trust has been very rewarding and has also given me the skills that have helped me succeed as an ambulatory nurse. The best moments in my career are happening every day that I’m able to serve the people in my community.”
