Working in the operating room and orthopedics is a fast-paced, ever-changing environment…and one in which head nurse Abigael Saavedra thrives.
“Loving and enjoying my job in the operating room and orthopedics makes me strive more and do better,” she points out, noting that she enjoys, “being able to achieve more than is expected of me.”
Saavedra says this approach was instilled in her by her family. “My family inspires me to be the best I can be,” she says. “I work hard for them; and my approach is that taking care of patients is the same as taking care of our family.”
Currently serving as Head Nurse for NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue, Saavedra says her nine-year career has been shaped by the ICARE values. “The five values align with my personal philosophy,” she remarks. “All of these qualities make me the best nurse I can be. Integrity and accountability are the most important values, because then everything follows from these.”
Nominators praise Saavedra’s “100% teamwork and commitment to excellence,” as well as her “tireless efforts” and her “incredible care of patients, which substantially increased OR efficiency.” Others cite her “contagious happiness,” noting “she makes everyone work harder and smile more” and add that she is “always very pleasant to and respectful of the patients, which is not always easy when dealing with trauma patients.”
Saavedra takes a traditional approach to her nursing responsibilities, even as she adopts the latest evidence-based best practices. “I was trained with ‘old school’ values on how nurses care for their patients,” she comments. “There’s so much tender loving care in this approach, going beyond what is expected. I hope the nursing profession in the future will incorporate the philosophy of nursing holistically, along with our adaptation to technology and improvements. This means we need hard work, patience and discipline for the new generation of nurses.”
